On the way to Vanfest the speedo started dancing, then went to half speed then no speed.

I guessed it'd come off the mount in the hub having just had the front worked on. But when I took a look it's still in place. Have looked inside the hub cap and the clip is still in place. It's connected at the dash so I guess the cable is shot?

I'm thinking I should try replacing the cable but as always need re-assurance that it's a job a muppet can do. Is it as simple as it sounds in terms of feeding the cable down behind the dash?

I had to replace my cable and it is a straight forward job. The fiddliest bit is to screw it in the back of the speedo without disturbing lots of delicate wiring. Also make sure you route it exactly as it came out to reduce any sharp bends. I had a couple of cables break inside the casing in a very short space of time and at first I thought they were faulty but actually I think the bend in the cable, particularly where it goes down from the speedo, was to sharp.

Present cable still going strong after two years.

you can do it mike, just retrace the path it took before and make sure not to lose the little circlip on the wheel end and that the square hole it goes through on the grease cap is still square

you know where i am if you get stuck

i know your sorted now but the easyest way ive found to do these is tape the new cable to the cab end of the old cable and pull it through from outside

Excellent tip! Saves taking that plate off under the front.

It's also best to fit the grommet first not to find it when you move the van - had to get back underneath tonight!
