I've bought a steering box but want to check the play before I do anything with it.

What's the best way of doing this and what are the reasonable limits?

Thanks

Pop your steering box in a vice (steering in centre) with a dial test indicator or vernier sticking up at the output shaft arm- touching it. Clamp a piece of wood or similar with the steering wheel radius marked on it to the input flange. Pop a reference point on the desk, I just butted up a lump hammer handle as a reference point :) Now, the MOT limit is 70mm of play, so that means 45mm in one direction on your "steering wheel" before the DTI starts to move. You can probably do it by eye, but it's less accurate.
