Looking for some advice/help (again)
Steering box still has a clunk to it as you first turn the wheel, I've adjusted it (assuming that was the issue) with no luck.
So, now thinking its a new box or refurb. What would be recommendations, but an early box (not sure how much), refurb (again not sure how much) or fit a late box?
Any advice would be welcome

I'd go late bay conversion as at least these boxes are available new .
I went through 3 steering boxes in the early years of owning my van due to no refurb ones being available and having to buy 2nd hand ones (RHD) .
Eventually after the 3rd failure on the main roundabout in Biarritz I got home and bought the Red9 double wishbone kit best money I've spent

Chris

Just looked at Megabug £495 for refurbed one (ouch) wouldn't mind red9 but still a few quid and would need to buy discs etc?

I have used a company called CPS based in Gateshead Tyne and Wear. I've had Bay and Karmann Ghia boxes refurbushed by them and no problems. I'm sure they will postal service. The price was a lot lower than price you have been quoted
Robert. :!: :!:

Thanks dustrat, I'll give em a call.

Very kind of the offer Bertie, cheers pal, am possibly toying around with the later box, think you have one?

I have just converted to a late box. If you can get a decent OG late box then I would go for it. (I think Darius has one for sale)
I have the new late box and had to move 2 mounting holes instead of 1 which is required with the OG boys.
The top one of these holes was a pain to do due to not being able to get a drill in to remove the spot welds on the anti crush spacer in between the skins on the chassis.
I drove the bus last night for the first time and the steering is nice a great improvement. Smooth no clunks or super tight spots caused by the need to over tighten the old box

Cheers Sam, did you do it yourself? Also, sounds like my box has same issues as your early box, with the clunk and tightness did it ever go through an mot?

Yes I did it myself, Darius gave me some info on what to expect.

Yes it did because it only clonked if you waggled the wheel back and fourth as my 4 year old often does !

Darius name on here is Radish, drop him a PM and when he is back from Ninove.

Graham at midland early bay refurbs them, just done ours although iv not driven it yet it feels much better thatn before!
