testing a themosat

Hi I've found an old themsat how can you tell if they still work with out fitting as don't want it ,but would like know if it any good

I think I’ve you put it in some hot water it should expand

But I’m not 100% sure
 
If fitted to the bracket there should be about an inch between the top of the unit and the bracket.

Definitely leave on bracket, I removed my good unit to calibrate it by placing in a plastic bag in a pot of water with a temp gauge... It expanded so much it bowed, cracked and was left with a pile of junk.

Great advice right there. Never test the thermostate out of the housing, or it will destroy it.
