Its been a busy Christmas season but now that its over I am going to get back onto the van steam to have it done for spring. I have been tinkering in the garage the last few weeks and finally have the motor together. I refreshed the long block with new seals and put on NOS components, powder coated tin and new cad etc. The only thing I did to sway from stock is that I installed a doghouse fan assembly for better cooling. It is obvoisly not noticeable and will give me the better cooling for those hot summer days. I also had the muffler aluminized coated, it is a tad darker than original but I am hoping that the coating will keep the muffler looking good for a while instead of a rusty can once the paint normally burns off. I went with the dark finish rather than the "chrome look" which in my opinion on a stock van is too flashy looking

A few other details like proper VW hose clamps, Kamax bolts and proper torque paint for the thermostat flaps.

I have a original paint 1970 Tintop (my Avatar) and a original paint Pastel white over Kansas beige 72 sunroof . The 72 will be getting the lowering treatment. I believe I have threads on here of both of the vans if you care to see.

This is going to be the best stock bay window in the world... Nice work as always.
Funny man  , I've had a lot of fun chasing down cool stuff for this van and all of the kind comments keep me pumped when out in the garage late at night. Hey its no special order colored 68 but it will have to do for now.

I have had a some small parking lot dents fixed by a paintless dent repair guy on the van this past Saturday and he is coming back tonight to finish up. It's hard to get pictures of it as they have been all to pretty small.

I also picked up my decklid, apron etc from a local VW resto specialist (Werk1). The work that Barry does is first class, he was even able to match up his paintwork to the factory spray pattern. You have to love dropping off parts and having not a worry in the world that they they will be substandard. I had the Glasruit paint mixed by a local supplier in the original Savannah Beige. The old lid had a ding on the "eyebrow" above the licensee plate. and had been painted a poorly matched colour.

A few more NOS bits have shown up:

NOS Steering box, old one had a bit of a knock and with all other parts in the front end being new I thought why not when I found it. Unfortunately not cheap.

I found this vintage water transfer decal as well and thought it was fitting for the bus so I applied it to the sliding door window

Both battery trays had been painted by the previous owner with some sort of house paint. At first I was going to keep it as I found but the paint was loaded on and looked like he painted over wet paint and the paint was all built up and nasty looking. I tried to strip off the paint to just reavaeal the original paint but had no luck. You could see that he had painted over the original beige but the yellow paint had bonded quite well to the orig paint and had to be stripped. The great news is that when I stripped the paint off the metal under the mess was like new. I am going to blend in the battery trays with some Savannah beige again to give it a more factory look.

Although I haven't posted recently I have been working on the bus. The ding removal guy finished up with his work and it turned out great. It's nice to have a 44 year original paint vehicle without door dings. I have been detailing the underside and the engine bay recently. As I mentioned before the original seam sealer was very brittle and flaking off so I removed all of it and the polished the inners and reapplied new correct grey seam sealer. Man is it messy stuff. I think the end result is satisfactory, especially compared to the factory mess that I have seen on a few of my other original paint vans. I am pleased how the paint under all of that Cosmoline shined up.

As you saw in one of my last posts the battery trays were pasted in think yellow paint so I thought that I would clean them up and when stripping just the yellow paint off failed I was left with blending in some Savannah beige. I also thought that while I was in there I would redo the seam sealer in there too. That stuff can end up everywhere if you're not carefull. It is applied before paint in the engine bay apposed to the inner wells when it is applied after paint. I wanted to keep painting to a bare minimum so I did't go crazy and touch up everything rather just getting rid of the yellow mess. I left a few splashes of yellow for good luck ;)
