As well as our Earlybays, I've also got a Karmann Ghia which I've had for the best part of 4 years now. The plan was to keep it for good, use it throughout the summer months and give it a full on rebuild when the time came that it struggled to pass an MOT.

However I've used it once this year. It's currently got no MOT (it'll take me about 2 hours to get it MOT ready though) and is on a SORN declaration. Being realistic it's not gonna get pulled out of the garage til at least next year now with the way things are looking.

If I was to sell it the money would obviously be very useful (especially with a caravan/bus/scooter to restore and a planned house move coming up). But on the other hand it is a car I wanted for so long that I'd probably struggle to get another one anytime soon.

So do I bite the bullet and stick it up for sale, and get some other projects finished, but possibly always regret selling it. Or do I leave it as it is, and just sit on it til next summer. What would you guys do in my position?

In this case I'd say keep it - you obviously really wanted one and I'm sure you'll regret it if it goes. From what you say it's very close to being MOT ready, so why not clean it up and use it? If you do get it MOT'd and drive it for a bit at least you'll have a better idea of whether you want to keep it long term - if this is the vehicle you wanted for ages why not get rid of something else instead...

;)

I don't see the point of MOTing it now unless I'm going to sell. Ghias are bloody cold in the winter (well they are if you have no heating and crap door/window seals).

That's a fair point if it's not going to get driven - but I'd still keep it if it means so much to you!

;)

I guess so dude.

Here's a pic of it from it's only outting this year (taken by EgoTrippin' I believe);

from the way you speak about it in the first post you dont want to sell it

but we know that already :)

Who cares if you projects take another 2 years to finish you have a whole life time to do them, so keep it and enjoy it at 84 ragging it around the Alps or sell it now finish your projects next year and live a life of regret and depression.

It's a head vs heart thing so to speak. Selling it would make life easier financially, plus it's one less car to have to do. But then I've had it so long and said I'd never sell.

hi,i was in same situation i had a landrover only used a few times during the winter so i sold and regetted it ,so i brought another one it only did 500 miles between mots last year so i say keep the ghia

almost the same thing, I had a loud of old toys that I was going to get rid of, all boxed and in very good conditions, Now I was going to sell them, then I sorted them out and decided the money I could make would help me out until xmas but then in a while I would miss them and I couldn't get them back so I am keeping them, they might sit for a year never looked at, but it gives me pleasure just to own them and that is what part of life is about, don't do it dude, just take your time on other projects :D

Or sell it to me I love those cars :D although if it has no heater my gf would kill me two cars without heaters would prob not go down to well although I do tell her she can have what she wants when she can drive :D

dude...I got me a Ghia and like yours its on SORN and has only been out once this summer. Its a real beauty and something I always wanted. I've toyed with the idea of selling it but I would regret it forever. I use the van most of the time cause I have a 15 month old son and can't get all the crap in the ghia (nor do I want to really).

I'm treating mine as part of my pension....in 30 odd years it will be worth a bit and won't have been hammered. Look it as an investment for the future. Don't forget to open the garage now and then and just stare at it...they are the most sexy car ever made.

Almost in the same situ with my buggy
mybuggy.jpg

the last 2 years done less than 250 miles... but it is so much fun to be out in it :D
The sensible thing to do would be sell it , then buy something I'd use more often...but I can't... I want to be able to blat around in the buggy with a stupid grin
If you love it ..don't sell it.......you may not get another one

Dont do it, youll regret it

Got a 65 midget in the garage, had it for nearly 20yrs now all repaired (failed mot 8yrs ago), just needs finishing, hav'nt got time.

Have toyed with the idea getting rid of it, but cant.

Id MOT it, if you have the time, then its a user on dry days, or a seller at your will.

My square did about 500 miles last year and has sat since April as its insurance gets swapped onto the van for the summertime.

Its kept inside, and is always 'there' though. I kind of like having it tucked away, knowing Im being self indulgent. :)
