Seems the tories are planning to reintroduce the rolling VED exemption for cars over thirty years old in line with the rest of europe. therefore all classic ( German) Beetles, T2s etc will by the time the tories get back in power ( if )will be tax exempt. Does seem ridiculous that a person with say a classic E type Jag built in 1973, their last year of production, has to pay full £160 tax and a person with an identical 72 model pays zilch
Labour by the way have no plans or desires to change the present system.

well they have got my vote, as long as they drop all this "green" bollocks that everyone is jumping onto.

i was in tesco last night who have launched environmentally friendly alloy wheel cleaner - because it contains sugar beet which is renewable, hence a green products

jesus

OUCH ! you all know what that will do ! devalue cars after the cut off date and make those in it more so

Thats what happens at the moment, eveyone wants a pre 73,at least if they reintroduce the rolling date as before that wont happen so much as the vehicle would soon be exempt, the current situation is a joke and apparently we arnt even in line with the rest of europe,i read most have a rolling 30 year exemption? and a rolling 30 year is better than what we have.

I am all for that, but I might have to see what else they wanna do before I vote for them :) free petrol and no tax I am Hoping for ;)

Tax exemption in this country used to be 25 years, but a change to 30 is better than nothing i suppose.
It makes me wonder if this is just a ploy though as im sure with the cost of fuel set to rise right up to the time it runs out, i doute people will be interested in driving classic cars in a few years. They will just be display pieces.

I was thinking the other day about the prices of buses, and how in maybe 10 years (less i expect) they will be worthless due to either being driven off the road due to eco policy or fuel costs.

if the fuel costs get too prohibitive (they are bad enough at the moment) i guess we'll have to think about switching to LPG etc. and at least we can keep the aircooled ethos... :?

at last the tories are coming up with some sound policies, i dunno what the feeling is like in england, but from the media and press in N.I it seems like labour are a sinking ship even with all the tory expense gaffes.

Ive had a Google, and I cant find this .... any links? :)

Classic car weekly often has articles about this kind of issue, often pro Tory as well. Not a good enough reason to vote for them though. And what's wrong about all this 'green bollocks'. I also don't like large companies such as Tescos cynically using it as another way to sell us stuff we don't need BUT we can't stick our heads in the sand. Every party should have a strong green policy.

I agree.

can we please get the message across to China and the US? we produce less than 1/50 of the polution of either of these too. It seems like whatever we do wont make much difference and they have already shown they wont follow our lead.

I do understand, but a lot of what we can do directly affects our immediate environment .... less landfill, less city congestion, less local pollution etc and for that we can all see and appreciate the difference ..... and if that plays a part in reducing our own personal expenditure and affects global impact even on a tiny scale then its good, surely?
We are a big consumer, so rejecting packaging, for example, will set an example, whilst we are a small producer we hold big influence as consumers.

 - Green smiley used there!

totally true...

...our biggest threat is CO2 and emissions affecting the climate and its changes, we cant do much about it when the US and China keep consuming the way they are. People think we'll get warmer and dryer here in Blighty, i believe well get wetter and windier and more extreme weather. Weve already seen what small scale flooding can do last year.

I watched a scary program about the release of millions of tons of methane after the perma frost starts melting (has already started on a grand scale) and its affect on the climate. Its 100 times more effective than CO2 as a green house gas. Doesnt bear thinkging about. On the upside there was 20% more volume of ice this winter at the poles than last year.
