hy lads, wanna prepare my westy for bits of welding,(when i get someone lol) and thought i would spend some time getting around the prob areas, cleaned up a bit, is there any special stuff to get rid of the under seal ? quick method ? cheers :)

I am using a £2.50 chisel edged 2" wide scraper from B & Q followed by a wipe off with Car Plan Engine Degreaser (£17.49 delivered for 5 litres off ebay).

Works much better in cold weather as it kind of "pops" off when cold. In warmer weather it becomes a treacley sticky mess thats a nightmare.

I used a hot air gun, scraper and white spirit, a very slow dirty job

Any kind / style shape of scrapers you can get in and I used thinners to wipe away small traces

Unfortunately no quick and easy way !! I know

had a go today on the inner panel, a 2" scraper and some white spirit, worked but slow progress in some hard to get areas, keep plodding on tho. might give that diesel a go tho, thanks lads :D

try petrol and a box of matches burns of a treat your motor will stink like tractor for days using diesel the good thing with forums is the amount of old wives tales that go around I often piss myself with laughter not

in the end i opted for the hot air treatment, nick cheers,, and white spirits to clean u/seal off, works a treat, but messy and boring, taking pics as i go along, cheers lads :D

Shot blast it off :) Took about 3 minutes to do the inside of my wheel arches :)

I guess ultimately it depends if you want to keep the paint underneath or not, oh and if you have the equipment, oh and if you don't mind grit falling out of places for the next 6 months at least :|

Every time the hammer hits my bus a handful falls out

hot air and a wall paper scraper has always worked for me too ;) , bought a cheapo hair dryer for under a fiver ( argos i think ) .

messy process and the bargain hair dryer has done me proud on many occasions to shift underseal .
It only ever broke after i drove over it :!: Damm cheapo products

If you've got an air compressor, chew through it with a "needle scaler"

This is on my list of things to do in the winter (and to get a compressor)

Graham L used a mixture of diesel and sommot else but never got to know wot it was ?

Scraper for the bulk, I have used petrol (in a very well ventilated place in extremely small quantities using a tooth brush to apply) for the awkward areas, never used a hot air gun or diesel but did used to use diesel from removing black top from my boots/ shovel or any other tools when laying black top so might work

It is a pig of a job and a blaster is what I'd opt for next

Combination of diesel and brake/clutch cleaner.

Paint the diesel on and let it soak in to soften the underseal, scrape off with scraper and hot air gun, then use the brake/ clutch cleaner to remove any residue.

Takes a while but well worth it

some good tips there ,, thanks i would love to do it all underneath ,but so time consuming, cheers, :D

Check my resto thread, scrape the worst off with blunt chisel and scraper, then do a small area at a time useing celly thinners (£10.00) for 5ltrs at most paint shops. Diesel is ok but leaves a greasy residue when done so you will need some panel wipe to clean or thinners .i just done a small area at a time and the underside was like new once wiped down as you will see in my thread :D
