What do I need to do to convert my westy to euro lighting? H-lamps, rear lamps and lenses but what else needs to be changed or re-wired and how?

Cheers.

In order to convert from US single bulb spec to Euro twin bulb spec some wiring mods are required. This is what I did for my 71 westy so the colours relate to a T2. First get the relevant wiring diagrams for your year both US and euro spec to compare. Once you have got both diagrams for your car and year you should be able to work it out.

1. Remove connection 54 from the 9 pin emergency flasher switch, this is the black / red wire from the brake switch to the relay.

2. On the fuse box locate the white / black wire on circuit 58. Its current function is side light on the LHS. This will now be your new brake wire circuit to the rear of the bus.

3. Remove the grey wire link or the grey wire that's connected on the other side of the fuse. This is the side light feed wire and must still be connected to the white / red wire. Because of the upgraded Amps through this wire check the fuse is good for 3-4 Amps.

4. Connect the black / red to this fuse, (on my diagram its orange wire I used). This completes the wiring changes at the front of the bus. The fuse should be rated enough to allow 4-5 Amps, which is white.

5. At the rear you will need those twin bulb reflectors, got mine from VW Heritage. You will need to make 2 sets of jumper wires to go from left to right and right to left. In the LHS the white / black is brake light circuit. Connect this to the brake light on BOTH sides - so run a cable jumper from this white black to the brake light connection on the RHS. Similarly the RHS white / red is the side light circuits and will need to be connected to the side lights on the right hand side.

6. The blinkers should connect the same way - LHS is black / yellow and the RHS is black / red. These connect to the amber top sections. Ensure good earth connections.

Remember to compare the original US and Euro spec diagrams for your car and year, available via the link I posted elsewhere in the tech links section.

Front mods, are straightforward if you choose to do it, and involve swapping out original US headlamp bowls (no sidelight) to Euro ones (with sidelights) and redirecting the sidelamp circuit wiring (white on mine) to the new sidelamp bulbs from the original dual filament indicator connections. JK do a conversion headlamp kit for about 30 quid at the moment.

Cheers.

I only changed the head lights, played with the brake switch, and wire the reverse lights up as the indicators to keep the back as it should have been (USA spec)
