When I got my van last year it had a recon engine that had a about 500 miles on it,everytime I go to reset the valves the gaps have closed up.Is this normal ? Its a twin port and runs really well.

When we rebuilt my engine we reused the heads as they were nearly new. At 5,000 miles we checked the tappets and they had closed up slightly. Adjusted them and carried on, got to check them again soon, so I'll see what happens.

Valve gaps that continue to close could be a sign of the valves stretching. This stretch tends to happen with age and is the precurser to complete failure and big probs. The engine may only have 500 miles on it but were the valves replaced when it was reconditioned?

However, it could just be that the engine wasn't stone cold when you checked the gaps.

Cheers
