Have a pair of dell 40 carbs which will prob. go on a 1776 or 1641 engine and not sure which stacks would suit best. The air filters are those issued in the CB linkage kit. The choice seems to be 15,25, 43 and 60 mm height. Anybody go any ideas?

type 3s where engine space is tight, run smaller air filters 43mm and less to save space, you should easily be able to fit 63mm filters which are about standard 2.5"-3" in height.

If you mean velocity stacks? they arent realy of much benifit to a smaller engine, and only come into their own right with the larger fast street engines and darg strip use. As long as you have the filters you should be good but dont run both together.

I don't think you'll gain anything by running both stacks and filters - the filter tops will interrupt the flow.

unless your really intent on looking after your motor and gonna be on the strip, your just asking for probs running stacks...

all that ***** getting sucked in is a sure way to increase wear on your heads cylinders rings etc...

and as Jovals said if your runningthem with filters the edge gained has been lost...

I only had filters on my IDFs in my oval and it went like **** off a shovel.

Taken from aircooled .net tech article about carbs

FILTRATION

There is one golden rule for carburetion systems of ALL types - you must always run air filters! Lack of filtration is a common source of piston ring wear, since the dirt is abrasive and will abrade your rings and cylinder walls. This wear also affects the jets in your carb! It's not uncommon for jet sizes to "grow" from the wear associated with non-filtered air and fuel. In addition to wear, dirt WILL clog the jets on your carburetors! Carburetors meter both fuel and air, and many of the passages and jets are very small -- it doesn't take much to clog one up. When it's clogged, your car will run erratically, and then you have to chase down the problem. Save yourself some grief and run filters, and just avoid these complications altogether. Filters do not limit performance, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I run "trumpet socks" on my twin 44's on the 1776 in my bug.

they fit over/around each stack and keep the crud and stuff out ok :D

think they are made by pipercross (have an XR on them)

Thanks for all the advise, I'll just use the air filters and save some cash in the process(the wife will be happy anyway!)
