Hi I recently got a CA import tin top westy and i think it is a 73 assembled vehicle but registered as 74 and want to know the easiest(and cheapest way of proving this to the DVLA for registration (i have heard VW germany takes ages and costs a lot) Are there any other ways to get proof of my chassis # (which is 2342082425)
Cheers

if its got lights up top mate its a late and by the sounds of it , it must be.
have you tried the m code decoder thing mate thatll reveal a lot.

also and not being an ******* at all as we do get lates on here but you may find that you will get more knowledge and advise from the late bay if your bus does turn out to be a late one.

vw production ended on here 72, apperently they did make something after that but maybe its just a rumour :D

jth

Volkswagen UK will do you a heritage letter that declares the production date, the DVLA will except it as proof. This is what I did. I think ('twas 4 years ago) it cost about £25 and took about a week.
The contact telephone number on my heritage letter is 01908 601601

The chassis number would appear to relate to a vehicle manufactured between August 73 and July 74.

As John said, get the info off the M plate and use the online decoder to get all the info.

Thanks I have done the M plate decoder thing and ita says planned production date 10th Dec 1973 which it also has a sticker in the door jamb saying the same but im not sure if it will be registered as a 1974( I put this post on here as i have an early bay too, Much Nicer!!) didnt want to waste money sending off for a birth certificate and find out was a 1974 model and get nowhere, Are VW germany better to deal with?

Anyone know how long they usually take, I ordered mine mid January and it still hasn't arrived??
Cheers Scott

Mine came after 3 weeks.

If the production was dec 73 then it will likely have been first registered in calendar year 74. Your log book should state the date of first registration.

Model year 74 ran from aug 73 to July 74 - same as the registration letter on the number plate. An M I think. So your bus is a 74 model year built in dec 73 by the sound of it.

Thats what i wondered, I didnt want to send off for a certificate and find out its a 1974 model and waste money for nothing, If thats the case i might as well tax it as a74 model(its a fresh import)

Your decision depends on whether the road tax exemption is based on date of first registration or date of manufacture.

lloks like some people were lucky at 3 weeks, As I've just received an email saying at current its 12 weeks or more!!! I ordered mine mid Jan so Looking mid April and was hoping to have it on the road by Stamford hall!!

Still no luck with this yet,Anyone else done it with a dec 73 bus as thats the manufacture date not the registration date

I used german vw and it was very fast, 2/3 weeks? its was easy at the time , it was around 4 years ago though, there was a link on the volkworld website i think that made it really easy to do

I'm just about to send of for a Birth Certificate for our '74 Jeans beetle.

The important date in terms of UK tax (VED) exemption is the manufacture date, i.e. when it rolled off the production line. If that was in 1973, it'll be free tax.

Our Jeans bug was manufactured August 1973, but not registered in the UK til Feb 1974, still free tax!
