Anybody know how the 1302/1303s box compares to the "fabled" 6-rib 2.0L gearbox?

i.e. if the 1302/1303s box can add 20mph to the top speed, is this better than the 2.0L?

Any other info/figures on how they compare to one another?

how much did it subtract from your bank account though?

You should be able to get a box for around £150 - 200.
The kit is about £300
+ labour chrages (approx 8 hours)

Not sure on the gearbox differences.
The stock bay gearbox has such low gearing that when you slam a bus and change the wheel/ tyre combo it means your top speed is about 50mph. Not sure if you would get the same increase in speed at stock height with stock wheels and tyres.

I have read somewhere that beetle and early bay boxes should have the same gears, so only final drive would be different. If it's so, I wonder if there's longer final drive available for bay box. This way, you woudn't have to change the whole box.

1303S box should have 3,875 final drive. Bay has, if I remember corrently, around 5 depending on models.

Here are 091 ratios:

But I don't remember was it on the web or the repair manual I was checking the early bay ratios...

the 1303 is an IRS you could get a GT gearbox and IRS that......as they have the same final .........

no one watching that 1303 on ebay then?????

i was offered a 1303s box at £300 but thats way too much, i found one at £80 hardly driven but in the middle of the deal at the moment.

The 2L box is a fair bit more expensive if you can find one. I have a friend with a restored 1303s, a midly tuned 1600 engine with twin 40s. The front end Lifts up when you hit 100mph so you cant push it much further and believe me that really scary in a street car.

I'm hoping to get a 1302/3s box and buy the kit from Tim, fingers crossed :D .

How slow are all your bays top speeds anyway?

I got my bay to do an indicated 80 on the flat before. Scary shit though.

This is with stock tyres all round, so the speedo should be vaguely accurate (is about right seeing as lorries are limited to 56mph, my speedo reads about 56 when I follow a lorry on the motorway)

I think its not the top speed so much as it reving its nuts off!

I can get 60 out of it but i don think it would get to 70 not on the tyres i've got on currently.

It would be nice to be able to crusie at 65 70 and still be able to hear anything other than the bleeding engine!

All speedos are off even lorries, they alway run fast.. try tracking your speed on a GPS, theres 7-10 mph at motorway speeds.

that indicated 80 would be way off, you were more likely doing 70, even 65 if the tyres have changed. A stock early just wont hit 80. Even if it could, it would be screaming like a banshee!

It is a tintop, which probably helped matters. And yes, the engine was singing fairly nicely. It's been rebuilt about a year ago so it all runs very smoothly. Stock 1600 with single carb though. And I'll say we overtook everything around us at the time
As I said in my post, original tyres on it. I need someone with a satnav..

However, it was on the approach to a steep Cornish hill, so with a fully loaded van (2 people, 4 boards and camping equipment for about 10 people, we were only doing 50 at the top... )

Since that one time, I've never gone past an indicated 65.

Having said all the above, doing more than around 35-40 sounds painful in third gear. That's quite a large jump to fourth.

I've took my bay to an indicated 73ish would love one of these gear boxes.. but the expense would kill me!

You want an AS (GT with IRS conversion)/ AT coded box or AU from the 1303, or possibly AK / AL from a Thing.... giving a final drive 3.875
