I've been looking on here, VZi and thesamba for a set of REALLY simple instructions in order to wire up a split charge relay and leisure battery. Even the goatboy how-to left me a little unsure so I need something really basic :?

I've got a Just Kampers "Complete Leisure Battery Kit" that comprises of:

1. The Relay Kit
2. Red Positive and Black Negative Heavy Duty Battery leads
3. Red and Blue Quick release battery clamps
4. A 6 fuse fuse box
5. 12V cigar lighter/socket
6. A very short brown earth wire with a spade connector at one end.
7. 2 x 5 foot length of wire, one red, one black, with a spade connector at one end
8. 1 x 25 foot length of red/blue wire with a spade connector at one end

I get the idea, but I'm confused by which wire in the kit I should use for what.

I'm guessing the really long blue/red one takes the positive from the leisure battery up to the new fuse box I'm going to mount somewhere inside the bus?

Then on the relay I think it goes like this:

Terminal 85 connects to the short brown wire which screws to the chassis/earth.

Terminal 86 connects to the lead that goes to the DF terminal on the dynamo (I plan to use a piggy back spade connector directly onto the dynamo here rather than splice the DF wire with a scotchblock). I guess I use one of the 5ft wires to do this? Can I connect this wire to the DF terminal on the voltage regulator instead of to the dynamo? It would make a neater install.

Terminal 30 connects to the Starter Battery positive, but what with?

Terminal 87 connects to the Leisure Battery postive, but what with?

The red heavy duty Battery lead seems too thick to wire up to the relay directly?

Also because the relay is fused does that mean there's no need for inline fuses on the wires that connect to the positive battery terminals? If they're unnecessary I guess it explains why JK don't include them in the kit.

Any advice appreciated!

Terminal 85 - short brown wire fit ring connector then use screw to lights earth, on leisure battery side.

Terminal 86 - connects to terminal 15 on coil (much easier and use piggy back)

Terminal 30 - connects to the Main Battery positive, put in line fuse near battery red wire

Terminal 87 - connects to the Leisure Battery positive, put inline fuse near leisure battery (use any red wire left or black if you have to)

The red heavy duty Battery lead seems too thick to wire up to the relay directly - I don't know why this is in kit? I don't think it is needed.

Also because the relay is fused does that mean there's no need for inline fuses on the wires that connect to the positive battery terminals? If they're unnecessary I guess it explains why JK don't include them in the kit - I would still put fuses in so you know where any future problems are.

Due to JK and other suppliers making it confusing I decided to make my own kit with all of the wires cut to length with the correct terminals attached with fuses in place at £17.50 delivered.

Cheers Faux. That's chrystal clear. Thanks alot :D

I wish I'd known about your kits a few days ago - reckon I could have saved myself about £20 :x . The red battery lead (and the quick release terminals) are a bit of a red herring. I think JK should include a couple of inline fuses in this bundle kit instead.

Final question: my domestic toaster has a 900W rating, is it possible to run an invertor off of this set up that will allow me to take my toaster on hoilday??

Yes, but it will kill the battery quick.

Yeah, that makes more sense I need to leave the home comforts behind.

I've just picked up a 300W inverter from Maplins (half price at £25!). It comes with a cigar lighter lead and/or crocodile clip leads to rig it directly to the battery. I noticed on the back there's a chassis grounding lug but the instructions make no mention of it.

Do these things really need to be earthed to the chassis? I thought you could just plug them in and go?

Cheers.

Faux, do you deliver abroad to the Netherlands?
I had my eye on the JK-set. But your kit sound good! I wil need your idiot-guide-instructions..

Hi. Yes I can deliver anywhere, £17.50 plus Extra delivery cost. I just sent one to the states and it was an extra £4.50

What is the rating of your split-charge relay?

The relay can be run at 30A or 40A, I always use the 30A and it comes with 30A cable too.

My kit isn't anything special but I have made it so it is simple and effective, it is easy to fit without any specialist tools. I crimp all cables with the right connectors, fuses etc
