What did you do?

I continued work on taking out my torsion arms to have new ball joints pressed in. For anyone who has been scared to do this, it's not too bad as long as you are not in a hurry. I haven't used any special tools, and as long as you look up old posts on forums, you can figure out how to do it. Only one more ball joint left to get out and I'm off to the races.

Got stuck (sway bar clamps ) so ended up cleaning up the bottom of the upper torsion arm stops:

I also go my new calipers in, so I painted them with some red caliper paint:

Caliper paint was about $6US and says it's good for 4-6 calipers. I put on three coats and may put on another coat in a week or so.

Also continued work on my poptop refurb. Stripped all old canvas and removed all the staples from wood frame and vinyl strips (actually my kids removed all the staples!) I will need to replace some of the wood framing, and will also put in new stainless hardware.

Liking the child labour!

I spent a couple of hours on the g/f's bus getting it ready for the new owner. Removed the old engine, stuck a new one in and gave it a bit of a spruce up.

Something to tell us Jabbo................

I spent a few hours removing a few bolts which are not stainless, from the poptop so that I can order some!
Also put some polyurethene sealant around the inside of the van where the
fabric meets the top of the van, to stop any water getting in, plus priced up the parts to get the chassis
done (so far, £300, but not including the new front beam) :(

(Edited because the first attempt, when read back, was garbage..... )

how did you press out those ball joints? did you use a special tool or have you a technique you can share? 8)

the child labour thing made me think of hardships and this....

FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, very passable, that, very passable bit of risotto.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Nothing like a good glass of Château de Chasselas, eh, Josiah?
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
You're right there, Obadiah.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Who'd have thought thirty year ago we'd all be sittin' here drinking Château de Chasselas, eh?
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
In them days we was glad to have the price of a cup o' tea.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
A cup o' cold tea.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Without milk or sugar.
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Or tea.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
In a cracked cup, an' all.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Oh, we never had a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth.
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Because we were poor. My old Dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness, son".
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, 'e was right.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye, 'e was.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
I was happier then and I had nothin'. We used to live in this tiny old house with great big holes in the roof.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing, and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling.
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Eh, you were lucky to have a room! We used to have to live in t' corridor!
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Oh, we used to dream of livin' in a corridor! Would ha' been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us! House? Huh.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Well, when I say 'house' it was only a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
We were evicted from our 'ole in the ground; we 'ad to go and live in a lake.
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred and fifty of us living in t' shoebox in t' middle o' road.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
Cardboard box?
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Aye.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.
SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!
THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick road clean wit' tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.
FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.
FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you.
ALL:
They won't!

dont ask me why

Not pressing out the ball joints myself. I'm taking out the arms and bringing them to a local VW guy who will do each one for $15/each. Sorry for not being more clear.

I did nothing this weekend, apart from go out on me new longboard with a massive birthday hangover

i sent my spindles off to be milled as the ones i got mail order were to big for the bearings, i was dissapointed as was looking forward to fitting them at the weekend, getting them back on wednesday.

so... i offered to do a bit of Chauffeuring (s/p) for a friend instead, in the other vw...

Before this weekend:

And after:

Know it is in my bug but I used the van to transport the engine approx 150 miles to get it to my bug (ok, the engine was sitting in my van for a week as I use it daily and the bug is 90 miles away) so it is kind of early bay related.

It now has a bit more go to match the looks...

:D

Still needs setting up properly though.

I mostly watched England pi$$ all over Australia, and France do the same to NZ (not often I want France to win !). Missed SA beat Fiji as at a Christening, but saw Scotland throw away a game to the Argies. AND the pub had a 18 barrel beer festival on !

More of the same this weekend (except I might pull the old boots on myself for the first time in a couple of years). Oil leaks and rust can wait - we only win the World Cup every 4 years.

Cheers dude

It's going lower soon at the front, I've got some dropped spindles to go on there. I reckon 1/2" ground clearance if I'm lucky by the time they are on 8)

I'm sure with a bit of effort you could go lower than that - you'll have to be careful if you drive over any credit cards though!

;)

Here is my inspiration..

CIMG4375.jpg

Belongs to a friend of mine, used to be his daily drive at that height. With 2 people in the car (it is empty in the pic) it was practically on the floor.

Mine won't go quite that low, partly for safety reasons :) the spindles should improve the ride quality though 8)
