Westfalia Trailer Wood

I am in the process of restoring a Westfalia trailer. The wooden sides need replacing what would be the best ply to use ordinary exterior or marine? Originally what was used to protect the wood, was it just varnish? Anybody know what shade it was?

So many questions, hopefully some answers, cheers.

I completely misunderstood the title of this thread.

We all like a bit of westy goodness obviously, but if you liked trailers just a little too much.... :lol:
