OK - I give up

I have spent an hour on this now....with zero success?

Couple of questions and pics requests....

Are the front and back poles the same length - the poles I have to seem to be identical. The rod ends are they supposed to be shaped in anyway to get into the bracket?
Oddly the front pole seems too long, although it looks like it would be reasonably close if I could get it in...

which led me to think the brackets were upside down, thicker bit at the top, the angle was all wrong then.

Happy to crack out the welder and adjust them but was assured the cab bunk was from a 68, the front brackets look original and the rears I replaced [screw holes already there]

So pics of the brackets would be great as would pics of the rod ends and the ultimate would be rod lengths.....

thanks in advance

[ps I did a search and couldn't find any pics!!]

Here you go - don't have a cab bunk yet but got what I believe are the OG fittings in my '71 westie:

cheers - still can't work out the orientation? the widest point is this up or down??

what I don't get is the widest point is at the bottom, but the poles go in from the top, which is the shortest width???

can some one explain how thes work ?

could I have later / the wrong poles? anyone got a pic of the end of the early westy rods?

Excerpts from the owners manuals shows these:

On my '71 the ends were right angled metal that slot into the brackets and the pole lengths were the same.

thanks my poles are the same length - its the brackets I'm not convinced I have the correct orientation on those - and currently the poles to not fit the brackets.

I checked again this morning - the rear distance is slightly too big for the poles I have and the front appears [see above re concern over which way up the brackets go] to be too long...

I bet it's a 68 only ruddy thing???

I spent 2 hours looking for a youtube video on it without success.....

The wide part of the cup is at the top,the cups are handed i.e. left and right. I had a similar problem with a bunk where the tubes were too long, picked up another bunk at DEVA DUBS and it fitted! I think you will find that the clips were fitted to a particular bunk and as the pillars slope the gap between the support cups ,left pillar to right pillar, gets wider the lower the clips are fitted :D Cheers Rob G

when I rotated mine so the wider gap part was at the top - the angle was all wrong....it's really bugging me now something so simple can be so tricky...

don't suppose you could do a pic, and a mid action one of the poles going into the bracket and one of the end of the pole....??

thanks for the help..this is making feel like a right pleb

hi

had the same issue with mine, the front are a really tight fit, scraped a bit on the body whenever I put the pole in like its a bit too long, but does go in with a bit of a fiddle. the rear was the main problem as the pole seemed too short, ended up packing out the brackets each side with a few small washers.
this sorted it and now it works fine.

before I fitted the washers

hope this helps....the bunks really good if you have little ones, so worth doing, my 2 1/2 yr old daughter lovers sleeping on it, better than at home!

fantastic - so the wide bits are at the bottom....do you think taking some off the front pole would work? or is it a case of once it's in the bracket it fits ok...[I'm concerned that if I alter them it won't fit!]

cheers

I would leave the front pole as it is. It is tricky to get in the bracket around the windscreen seal and has marked the paint a bit.

The next tricky bit is getting the rear pole in when you have an OG canvas. You have to pull like made to make the distance :D but that's another story!

^^ Check the pole lengths, someone posted them for me when I had troubles. It's a few posts down.

Hope this helps. Andrew.

ok so my bars are both 1427-8 mm long.

the back is about 5mm short

the front is about 5mm too long although if I bend the screen rubber out of the way it seems to jiggle in..this is without a canvas though and it cannot be right.

The ends are like this

and there doesn't seem like much room between the bracket and the screen rubber?

Did alll westy campmobiles get these cab bunks - there isn't any additional holes or repairs [ I did wonder if it was a later mod by a PO?]

I had a similar problem with mine.
I ended up putting the front & back brackets at slightly different heights as the van is narrower the heigher it gets.
You can't tell by looking when it's fitted but 10 - 20 mm up the sides makes a lot of difference.
Hope it's clear and helps.....

I cant see your pics (Im at work) ... are your poles the square ones?

68/9 should be the black round poles and are a different length ;)
