What are the holes for in the rear quarters?

On my cross over there are two holes on the lower rear quarters, just below the rear lights and slightly above the bumper line. They look like they were put there by VW. What are they for?

Just a guess, without seeing a picture of how big they are etc - but could they be holes to mount a reverse light of or similar?

definitley most likely if its a left hooker, or possibly fog lights or reflectors?
