In the quest to return my engine to the standard set up to improve driveability (and get rid of a very annoying flat spot off idle) I have sourced a reconditioned PICT3 34 carburettor which if the rain ever stops I will have a go at fitting.

I am currently running an 009 distributor but would like to fit the standard vacuum advance version.

But which one ? :?

There is a confusing selection of distributors available both new and used.

My van is fitted with a standard twin port 1600 lump. (Considering a swap for an outboard motor)

Any idea of the distributor code / type I should be looking for ?.

Thanks

It looks like you have two to chose from. Plenty of good second hand ones at shows, if the vac can is shot these are still available from a few places, I got 2 new ones from the states for about 50 quid delivered.

From a thread I asked a similar question on (think you posted on there as well?):

You need a SVDA. Part number 043 905 205L or just 043 905 205 is correct for a bus.

The SVDA has a fatter, smaller diameter vacuum can compared to the SVA.

You could always keep the 009 and increase the main jet 1/2 a full size, say 127.5 to 132.5. The vac advance dizzy richens the mixture more than the 009, and it is the vac dizzy that the Solex was built/jetted to run with. Try it. I run twin Kadrons with a 009 without any hesitation when jumping on the gas.

The part numbers you have quoted there are for the vac. advance dizzy that has both an advance and a retard function. VW dealers began replacing those distributors on brand new cars with 'SVDA' distributors before they even got driven as they were not that good.

You want an SVDA (single vac, dual advance (meaning it has a mechanical advance like the 009 does as well as the vac part)) with the part numbers posted above by Benyon (any SVDA will 'do' though, my spare one is from a bug and works just as well).

Doing that would increase fuel consumption though.

Not to mention that the vacuum distributor does NOT richen the mixture at all. It advances the timing when pulling away to get more immediate power. It also advances the timing under light throttle, meaning that you get more MPG under light throttle (i.e. motorway cruising). Varying the total advance by throttle load works well, because it means that the engine can perform better when lightly loaded, and when heavily loaded will not overheat (as it would if it were further advanced all the time)

Kadrons run far better with an SVDA distributor - I run them on my bug and get 40mpg with a light foot on a long run. Can't sniff at that ;)

I'm i the proces of changing my dizzy for a *205 with petronix ignition.
Was advised this dizzy should be correct for my engine (standard 1600TP) and looking at the other threads hopefully i've got the right one

The part number for 1600 tp beetle engine ended in 034 - commonly known by that number (thats the bosch part no., the vw no. ends in 205), this is the Single Vacuum Dual Advance distributor which is the perfect match to your 34 pict 3 carb. There is a van version which i have which is part number ends with 015 (bosch), but it looks identical.

You can also use the standard US DVDA which has a retard vacuum too (the retard can be disconnected allowing it to be set up as the 034 distributor).

You'll get to recognise the look of the one your after though as its the one with the small style vacuum can, a picture is shown above in the thread.

Once i'd changed my set up, to the 034 distributor and standard air filter with preheat, I no longer had the flat spot you mention! Happy days

Im changing from a DVDA to an SVDA, keeping the DVDA as a spare but i read that VW replaced the DVDA's due to reliability issue's.

Froggy, what i'm saying is you can set your timing to 7.5 degrees btdc, if you unplug the retard line from the carb (plug it though) and it will in effect be an svda distributor.

This is what i ahve done, but i needed a 2nd dizzy to upgrade to electronics and got the SVDA at the right price, keeping my DVDA as back up. I could of just upgraded my DVDA but have heard little mutterings about the elcetronics failing and leaving you stranded in the middle of where ever. Was going to get a spare dizzy anyway so now i have the best of both worlds

If you are keeping a back up dissy time it and then remove it with the clamp still locked on to it,
then you don't have to worry about timing it when (if) you need to fit it on the side of the road.

You just need a new clamp for the new dissy.

I always carry a timing light in my bus

Yeah, me too - haven't put that tip into practice, just picked it up on VZi recently.

Yeah, i'll also be carrying my timing light, along with a few other bits and peices.
Who needs camping equipment and clothes when you can have spares and tools

Do you know the bosch no. too?

Thanks for solving the mystery dizzy :) still can't remember how I got it as I've always had 009's on the type4 in the bus

Hi Here is the code you need i am doing exactly the same as you this weekend to mine - Bosch 0231 170 034 an SVDA Distributor, the engine should be ok with this setup with your 34 pict.

stick that code into google and you will find the code for the vw original part and the replacement the original ends in 205 i think but 034 is the same thing.

good luck

Ed
