Thumbing my way back
Was speaking to a mate tonight and for some reason he is not convinced about his engine size in his van.

On his V5 it says it is a 1700cc and it is a type 1 engine.

What are the main clear cut ways of telling the size?

Cheers dudes

not an easy way to tell from looking at it, a block that should be a 1300 could be 1300, 1600, 1641, 1679, 1776, 1835, 1914.....
apart from stripping it down you cant really tell

if hes worried for insurance reasons then get it changed to 1600. my logbook said my bus had a 10litre engine till a while ago!

Many originally Type 4 engined vans have been changed to Type 1 as when they go 'pop' its a cheaper fix.
I have a 1700 crossover at the mo which has a 1600 Type 1 fitted. Check the engine code to be sure.

shhh! my insurance might be listening!

ive got a 10litre twin turbo diesel in the back with a 250 shot of NOS!

Can't find anything on the t2 owners site suggetsing the start of that code.

But there is little bit on the Samba saying that it could be a 44 bhp engine from an automatic engine?

Some people are telling me it's a original 1300 engine and some are now telling me it's a 1600?

WTF, anybody?????

Please

Weird!

Pulled the list down from type 2.

This should help you decipher what sort of engine you have in your Volkswagen. The "Code" column shows the first character or two of the engine code, stamped on the case. I supplied data for Porsche 914 cases as well as VW 411/412 cases just in case your Bus has one of those engines in it (since they are easily interchangeable).

Good work, but it still doesn't tie it down for me. I have an 'AD', which is a 'replacement' 1600. As far as I understand, the standard '1600' block can be a 1584 or a 1641 without any mods and all sorts of other sizes with mods. Given that it's no doubt been reconditioned at least once or twice, I think that the only way to find out would be to open it up and do some measuring.

if it was a 1300 in a bus it would be soooo slow, im talking 45MPH top speed. im guessing its a 1600 built on a replacement case.
if he is that worried then pull it out and crack it open but if its just for the V5 id change it to 1600 and get the right engine code on it
