Have just tried to fit new wheel to my bay. however they do not fit around the calipers, so i am thinking about getting some wheel spacers. do they effect the safety of the wheels?? or are they perfectly fine to use? especialy on motorways

There is not much extra stud thread to play with so you may need to take hat into consideration before getting too involved.
What sort of whells are they?

not a big fan of spacers but if you need to run them make sure you swap your wheel studs for longer ones. its not too hard a job
what wheels you running?

personally I don't like the idea of spacers, BUT Porsche (and others) fit them on some of their wheel combinations - If it's good enough for them…

The thing to bear in mind is that spacers can place an extra strain on your bearings - make sure everything is tip-top before you fit them!

;)

…although that depends on the offset (ET) of the wheels - for example a rim with ET52 on a 20mm spacer, will bring the effective offset down to ET32 which is near stock.

Spacing wheels/changing offsets just to get them to fit can have and adverse effect on suspension and steering geometry as well as load on bearings as metioned above

:)

had bought a set of early wide 5's to put on the van as i like the look of them. Turns out that they are the wrong size 14inch and the inside of the wheels is shaped differently hence touching callipers. The standard wheel that i have are 14inch so didnt realise there would be a difference.

pick up some bug 15"s, looks the same.
you have disc on a wide5, CSP kit? if so you have to run the 14inch csp kit

CSP are a german company selling wide5 disc kits.
what years your van, small five stud or wide 5, disc or drums?
ill try n point you in the right direction dude

van is a 71 so came with the small 5 wheels. Discs on front. I do intend to upgrade the brake system in the near future. so any advice would be appreciated. not looking for anything to fancy just something that is an improvement over the standard.

OK im guessing by spacers you mean adaptors.
trying to get the early look on the later style disc is gonna be problematic.
you can get wide 5 adaptors from Machine7 but you will probably have problems with clearance on the back end, you will also increase the track all round..
you could get a wide 5 disc kit for the front but your looking at £650 up, rear might still pose a problem.
my honest advice is walk away dude

…or modify some domed hubcaps to fit - not perfect but a damn sight cheaper!

…or may I suggest GeeBee Gas Burners in late bay PCD from Java? mmmm…[/i]
