Hi Yall
Need some info about which clutch to use, I have a 6 rib box going on a twinport 1600 engine
Which one of these is the best,

Number 1

Number 2

Number 3

Any info would be appreciated
Thanks Vinvan

You need one to suit your gearbox - the ones with a central support ring won't work on a van not designed for it.

The ones with the central support ring are for later gearboxes with the guide sleeve over the input shaft on the gearbox.

I'd imagine the multi-finger type to be slightly better, but that's only gut feel :)

Once you have decided which one you need have a look at this thread for a kit. Pricing is normally better than the vw specialists: http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53972&start=0&hilit=Clutch" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bit confused, so here are some photos of the Gearbox thrust bearing
PS picture number 1 (in the first post) is the original clutch from the engine i want to fit

You don't have the guide sleeve so that is the earlier pad type, number 2 in your photos. Number 1 is the same but a different manufacturer I think?

A 6 rib gearbox is gonna be a bit mighty for a stock 1600 imo

Agreed.

I have also never seen a six rib box with the earlier type release bearing, odd. Maybe somebody swapped over an earlier type bell housing?

I noticed this too? Can't understand why as the later style is superior.

Does anybody know if the 6 rib bell housing is unique to the 6 rib box or does it appear on any other g/box models?

The bell housings can be swapped over but be aware that 6rib housings are for attaching to type4 engines and hence you can't use then on a type1 engine because the flywheel and starter are different. Hence to fit a six rib box to a type1 engine you have to use a bell housing from a 1600 - both early (like you have) and late (with the guide sleeve) will fit.

Hi Trikky,
Do you mean the bell housing is right but the thrust bearing is wrong? Which thrust bearing would be suitable? We might seem a bit vague about this but the bus was purchased completely stripped down. The gearbox and thrust bearing was as we got it - there was no original gearbox with it. By the way this will eventually be a 1776 but funds are tight at the moment. Thought we could get it on the road as soon as possible and leave the engine upgrade until last. The brakes have already been upgraded (discs on front).

Below are some more pictures. Am I right in thinking this IS a 1600 bell housing and not for the type 4 engine. Any advice welcome.

The thrust bearing is not wrong. It's just an early one that is used with the clutch with the ring in the centre. Number one and two of your images will work. Number two is a better choice because the diaphragm type clutch gives a lighter pedal.
