I'm building a 1641, on carb, which is a good distributor to get without me having to remortgage my house?!?

i have a 1641cc with a standard carb and use a genuine 009 and it runs great, the repro 009's aren't anything like as good my engine came with a new repro from the engine shop, i swapped it over and it made quite a difference to how well it ran.
if John Muir recommends them that's good enough for me

Thanks, I've been searching the net all day and I can't find an original one. Does anyone have any ideas or something I could use which is as good?

Petronix do a 009 replica with a built in electronic ignition, these are very good units:

avoid 009`s and go with a decent genuine svda dizzy , fit electronic points if you want , even get a genuine one reconditioned

Are 009's really that bad I thought they were a performance choice. I had one with my old 30PICT carb and it seemed fine. But just put a new 34PICT3 on I got off type2tattoo and remembered I bought a used SVDA way back. Would I be better get a new rotor arm for it and fitting the SVDA? Got to get the carb tuned so would like the right dizzy choice before I shell out for a tune up.

Sorry for the hijack but dizzy's I have no clue about :msn4:

I have done a lot of reading on this subject.. :)

The 009 is designed for industrial engines that generally run at constant revs. It only has a centrifugal advance, so a 2d system. It only ever takes account of max load conditions. It also has a non optimal advance curve around 1-2k rpm ( too retarded)
In a SVDA, when you accelerate from idle you will momentarily get a strong Vac signal that will advance the timing by around 10 degrees and this really helps the engine pick up. The 009 does not have this, but what it does do is go from flat to full advance pretty quick around the 2-2.5k revs and "appear" to give the engine a boost the feels like a good power gain over an SVDA ( in actual fact it is giving you a flat spot at 1-2k).
The 009 will also not give any part throttle vac advance, so only ever give you max centrifugal advance that you set (usually around 28-30 degrees), where as an SVDA will give you up to an extra 10 degrees under these conditions which helps with fuel economy and throttle response. Think of it is a very basic 3d ignition system, advance, revs and load.

I would get the SVDA out and use that. Junk the 009 and see how your bus loves you for it.

The 009 was used by tuners to give a cheap replacement to the SVDA, which is fine in a race engine where you are WOT all the time, but not great for street driving in a heavy bus.

If anyone wants, I have the advance curves of the 010, 009 and the 043 SVDA as I wanted to generate a map for my megajolt.

Edit to add the curves. Note that the 043 SVDA is centrifugal advance only, not adding the vacuum advance.

Hope that helps.
