I've bought an empi hard-start relay to ease the load on the creaking ignition wiring and want to position it in the engine bay. This means I'll need to lengthen the wiring, my confusion is does the wiring need to be of any specific rating or is there a "standard" wire that I should buy. There is no information on the packaging telling me any of these details.

Cheers

Sadly the majority of kits on the market are little more than a relay and some poor quality cables attached, designed by 'manufacturers' who don't understand the principle of a starter motor. Firstly the cables should be as short as possible, so why not mount the relay actually on the starter motor? It is OK to remove just one of the long 'through bolts' on the back of the starter, and yes it will need a bit of heatshrink to keep the wet out. Use 4mm cable for the 30 and 87 connections, and thin as you like for the others.

I put mine in engine bay, you can get to it without lying on your back if you have a prob, the stock wiring went all the way from battery to ignition switch and then back to starter again.

if you get the wiring diagram from vintagebus.com it has all the wiring sizes on.
