Iv just got the engine into my 68 bay window, the engine has an alternator conversion and would like to know which regulator will be needed/how to wire it up?

These are pics of the parts that I have fitted :)

Also on the other side of the engine bay are a few random wires, I assume one is the ignition live to the coil? which one is it please and what do the others do?

Thanks in advance :)

Alternators have built in regulators so you can bin that one. Take a look at http://www.vw-resource.com/alternator_generator.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not all of them, and in fact the alternator pictured above by the OP is an externally regulated one.

The Bosch Alternator 0120 400 836 is in my opinion the best air-cooled alternator ever made the said company, although they are getting a little old and may be tired (just like me) by now. Hence, provided it is in working order i would advise sticking with it. The regulator pictured is for a dynamo only and not an alternator. There are two basic types of regulators for external alternators; the original mechanical at around £45 and the modern electronic version at a little under £20. Mechanical regs are for absolute originality; electronic ones for practical and reliability users.
A short wiring harness is required to connect the alternator to the regulator. Contact me if you require either.
