Hi,

I've just had an Alternator conv, and since this, he bus will not start when up to temp. I think it may be over heating slightly for some reason and this could be the issue??? When I do manage to get it going, it also seems to be missing slightly. The coil is hot to touch,(is this normal?) so I'm gonna start by changing it along with the dizzy cap and leads. I'll also need to check the flaps I think, to see if they are open. Anyone else had a similar issue, and if so, what was the cause?

Cheers!

Chris. :? :D

A coil will get fairly hot in normal operation.I would check that the ignition feed getting down to the engine bay is a good sound circuit. You could try running a separate live from the battery to the + side of coil, see if that makes it start easier (obviously as a temperary check don't leave it there forever!).Then it's a matter of tracking down the dodgy connection, from the ignition switch all the way back to the engine bay.

Also check all the connections on the starter motor and alternator, remove them and clean them up (disconnect battery first) Also remove and clean the earth lead terminals as a matter of course (it's free)

Is the starter motor cranking over fast enough when it doesn't start?
I take it the fuel pump was changed also.It could be that that is the problem.
Where the outlets are for the fan housing if you remove the corragated air pipe does the fan seem to be blowing with force when you rev the engine up?

Thanks for that. :D

I'm going to give it going over tomorrow to see if I can find the prob. Someone else mentioned the Ignition switch, but I would of thought it would have been playing up before the alt conv when everything was fine???. I have had a fuel pump change and the starter does seem to be turning over ok, however, the bus will fire up every now and again when hot after I've let go of the key and it returns to the "on" position for some reason??

Cheers.

Chris.

the last bit you mentioned re letting go of the key sounds like the key switch. mine did it a few months back fitted a new switch and fine.

Would crank over as long as the key was held, once let go and sprang back it fired.

Uber,
:)
Yes thats exaxctly what happens, but it doesn't do it all of the time, just every now and again. The majority of the time it won't go at all untill after half an hour or so when it's cooled down a little.

Cheers.

when you you say wont go at all, you mean cranking but not firing or not cranking either?

Make up a temporary lead to plug onto the coil from the battery to eliminate ignition feed first. Then if it still won't go check you're getting a spark. If not then check your coil and points/condensor.If you have a spark and it still won't go check the fuel pump delivery. It could be a dodgy new one.If you have fuel delivery check the fuel cut off switch and finally the carb for blockages.Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

It turned out to be a dodgy connection from the coil to the carb sol. When the van was getting warm, the female part of the spade connector was expanding a touch and making the connection virtually non existant and obviously once the van had cooled enough , the connector contracted enough to make the connection allowing it to start. I've renewed all the leccys at the back tho now along with an electronic ignition. Runs super now. :D

Cheers!
