I have 2 of these that have come out of my bus (one each side) and I have no idea what they are except probably some type of switch (but for what I have no idea).

They are a metal cylinder closed off on both ends (we removed the end off of one of them to take a pic of the insides and to try and work out what they were). They sat inside the bus in front of the wheel arches (see arrow on pic) raised on brackets with a metal screen over the top of them to protect them.

They were ovviously wired to something but the wires were disconnected when I bought the van. The screw on the top adjusts the distance that the heavy lead ball moves/bounces in transit. A circuit is made when the ball touches the plate at the top of the cylinder.

Any ideas on this or if you need anymore explanation please let me know - I am intrigued to learn what they are!

Cheers

Weird.

This is a long shot. It looks like the ball is capable of bouncing inside the tube, and thereby completing the circuit. The only thing (IMHO) that could force this to happen would be the movement of the bus as it travelled over rough ground. Could it be some joker had setting up some sort of fancy lighting that flashed as the van moved along?

I did say it was a long shot. :D

Odd one huh!

They are definately activated by an up and down motion, bumpy roads etc - they look professionally made.
:?:

Think they may be an older version of these. Vibration sensors or levelling sensors used for off-raod testing???

This is of course only a possibility until someone comes up with the definitive answer and makes all of us seem rather foolish!!!

If it makes any difference the bus lived all it's life in dry state OZ - I am the 1st UK owner

Was your van purchased from Ireland or some Al Qaeda operatives that were transporting "fertilizer" ?

My initial thought

but would suggest an incline / level indicator

Maybe the bus was used in the outback to transport Nitro glycerine to the mines so it required some notice if the bus was being shook about too much.... or indeed carrying anything delicate

eggs

or maybe it was connected to a massive illuminated "if the bus is a rocking dont come a knocking" sign

71Westy - the wires were not connected to anything - they went through the floor and just stopped
