Ok recently had new front drums fitted all well and good then couple of weeks later slight knocking noise coming from the front, spoke to Mike who fitted them he said no probs bring it in Monday morning will have a look, also had the van was booked in with t2d they fitted adjustable rear plates new front tyres new rear shocks ect ect.Driving back from them on Thursday morning and the knocking noise was still there, they also said go back to who fitted them as they could hear the knocking noise.Today the day before taking to Mike i took both front wheels off to clean and shine all good put them back on went for a cruise and the knocking noise was worse then started getting worser lol slowed down from 25 to 5 and the passenger wheel came completly off, luckily i had pulled off the road into a small layby to get out to fear the worse,1 nut was keeping the wheel on it had caught the front arch but it could of been so much worse. So the knocking noise was a loose nut but t2d didnt spot this and i am a bit wet behind the ears as i didnt know what the noise was.So how can this be a faulty nut it was the locking nut and nuts on alloys come loose much ?? i had to walk back down the road to retrieve 3 of them lol and i only tightened them with a cross wrench but have now brought an extendable wrench witch tightened them up a treat, has this happ to any 1 else was it a faulty nut which every 1 missed....Rowan

Lucky escape by the looks of things, are the wheels new? drums have a coating or painted?
maybe something was stuck between the wheel & drum that caused the wheel to not tighten up properly?

So T2D fitted new tyres and didn't tighten up the wheel nuts, afraid i'd have been straight on the phone complaining, your very lucky you were going walking speed or this could of been very serious

This is why i think 1 nut was faulty in some way,not blaming t2d as the knocking was before and after i went to them and shortly after Mike had fitted the drums and he uses what they use in all tyre garages you know hydrolic gun on the nuts,it is a bit strange every 1 missed it as it tightened up like all the other nuts, know 1 thing i will be checking them more often than not...Rowan.

Wow, looks like you had a close shave :)

I gotta say, I HATE those rattle guns with a passion. As far as I'm concerned, they're fine for undoing nuts. But for tightening important bolts like wheel bolts, I won't touch em.

if running alloys i always tighten to the specified torque, then after 30 mins or so re-torque.(using windy gun to take up slack and wrench to finish) and this is how we do it at work to. and check again after about 100 miles. then all should be well.

lucky escape.

Jon.

when i put in a screw i use a screw driver,
and when i tighten a nut i use a spanner or wrench,
im not the biggest fan of those air wrenches. they seem too over tighten things.
i spent the first year of my apprentiship learning about "engineers feel" the last guy who used one of those on one of my cars, some dosey bugger ripped the threads from the rear hub on my sharan when i was test fitting some merc splits as he didnt check whether i needed longer bolts. £100 plus leason and full rear arm strip down for new bearings and hub.
slow and steady wins the race

It seems a bit stange like somethings not right,it had new front drums then new tyres on the front and the noise was there, you took the front wheels off and put them back on then the front wheek fell off nearly.Maybe you have front wheel bolts that are too short or the wrong type for the wheel.Or the threads are damaged. It seems a bit of a coincidence that 3 seperate people have failed to tighten the wheel bolts properly?

Excatly what i am thinking on the nuts but this morning the knocking is still there, being looked at Monday morning will let you know the outcome....will never tighten em with that cross wrench again lol....Rowan.

Check the wheel studs, have they got the correct fitting taper, ball or shanked with washer? Take a wheel stud off and check against wheel

i would have said the same thing. really strange but could be explained by the wrong taper type of nut for your wheel

Too right :)

It is also why only 2 of the 5 wheel bolts on the rear wheel of my beetle are actually doing anything. They've all been overtightened with a rattle gun and 3 of the threads are knackered.

New drum will go on before I drive it again ;)
