Oil bath air filter breather question

Ok simple question, on a standard setup for a 1969 twinport engine with a standard oil filled air filter there are two large breather outlets on the air filter body.

Obviously one goes to the breather next to the oil filler but which one ? The top one on the air filter or the bottom?

This leads to another question as to what the remaining large outlet in the filter is for and what attaches to it.

Has anyone got a nice clear picture or diagram they could share ?

The tee piece is for later buses with the fuel breather system in the rear corners. You can just plug it if you don't have these.
It won't spray anything as that connection has negative pressure.
 
Ah great thanks for that, I was just concerned it would get messy and oily if I left it but I’ll plug the top one up.

I have one final question the connection from the air filter to the oil filler is different sizes the air filter breather hose was the standard size I think about 12mm but the oil filler connection was much bigger more like 16-17mm is this mix and matched parts ? Ie do I have the wrong parts.

The standard breather hose fits inside the connection at the filler instead of on it which can’t be right ?

You've probably got a few mis-matched parts, as far as I'm aware the early air filters had the same size hose as the breather connection.
1968/69 MY buses only came with a 1600 single port, so that's been swapped at some stage.
 
Hey both - can I ask a question. The air filter has a flap controlled by a solid cable off the back of fan shroud - I guess to control warm air going through filter until engine warm up….. I remember taking mine off but it has since got lost. Any ideas where I could get a replacement??
 
Sorry to jump in on the thread, just checking before heading to busfest tomorow I noticed this cable had come off the oil bath, can't see a way to fix it back on. Should there be a lead weight to help open and close the filter?

My filter hose now fits inside pipe connection because i fitted the later , much better vacuum controlled type oil bath set up. I think from what your saying your 69 has this type fitted, it wasn't fitted until about 72. My van is a 71 year, it originally had the one year only and unavailable waxstat type flap operated oil bath filter. This had the smaller type hose connection. Hope this helps to explain your mismatch. 😁👍

Pretty sure it’s a solid push/pull cable the comes off the cooling flaps on back of shroud. Not sure how it fixes on (c clip ??) I guess it controls warm air intake until engine is at running temperature.
I may be completely wrong though !

I thought c-clip as well but there isn't a hole in the rod to pass it through.
