Hi All,

I’ve owned my LHD 71 from California for six years now 🙈 and it’s finally time to start the project!

The bodywork is in very good condition and I’ve changed my mind a thousand times whether to paint it a different colour or leave it Sierra yellow. The lower part of the van has had paint at some point so I’m sure it’s not original and there’s quite a few knocks and scapes in various places so I have decided to change the colour and get the bus painted before the rebuild.

Can anyone recommend someone who specialises in this field. I’m looking for a top quality finish.

I live in Manchester,

Thanks in advance

Pete

Spikes one of the best if not the best https://spikesvintagerestoration.com/

Probably best known for their work on show cars but also do normal stuff including mate’s ‘71 after it got peppered by massive hail stones in France a couple of years ago

Also Phil Norman at https://www.brickfieldvw.com/ who did my ‘71 in 2012 and has held up well , although it’s recently had some TLC under the front windscreen

If it was me I'd be keeping the Sierra Yellow as this is a rare colour in a '71 bus, mainly see it in '72 onwards and even then they are rare with low lights!

I'd even be tempted to get the repairs done and blend in the paint were you can, but then I'm a fan of old/OG paint rather than shiny new builds..... Good luck, Midland Paintworks do turn out extremely good work btw

Haha, your messing with my head!!

That was the original plan tbh, especially because it doesn’t need any welding anywhere.

Maybe I should speak to Midland Paintworks about blending in. 🙈

There are a few specialist pain blenders around. My understanding is paint shops will want to have your van looking perfect if they have there name on the job…. Would be a crying shame to loose that colour imo

Try A6 body shop in Leigh, they did my late bay a couple of years ago. Great job and has done many splittys and bays. Reasonable with price

Ok, so creationblue brought me to my senses ( for now ), regarding the paint. Gunna sought the interior and get it running and see how it goes.
I must admit it didn’t seem right painting a bus that hasn’t had any welding or panels renewed.

I’ve got it booked in with Stuart at VHS trimmers for a new headliner and upholstery

Maybe I should start a slow build thread?

Thanks creationblue for ur advice 👍

Great idea, start your resto thread and do loads of piccies and you’ll thank yourself in ten years time.
