Hi, I hope someone on here can help me.
I've got a 71 lhd westy, I imported it in 2007,all electrics working but lights changed to UK spec for initial MOT.
I've used the bus regularly since 2007 , always passed MOTs , right up to date., many trips in Europe, all over UK, never had a electrical problem.... before now, and I caused it!!🙄
Came back from a trip to Wales, realised that my dip/main beam had stopped working. Next day I checked all the wires and relays, all working fine. Next day I thought I'd check everything again, pulling out the fusebox again to re - check it all, I had trouble unclipping the fusebox this time,so yanked it out....2 fuses blew and obviously I changed them. ( Yes, I know I should have taken the leads of the battery, but I didn't....I'm an idiot. 🤢).
I noticed that without the key in the gen light was on!? So I turned the key and she started as normal...... turned the key off.....and the engine carried on turning?!??!! I went to the engine bay and took the negative lead offs and it stopped. Looked at the gen light it's on, (I'd put the negative lead back on)even without the key in the ignition. I haven't been able to start the bus ever since!
I've tested all the relays in my 71 Beetle, tested the dizzy (electric ignition,) in the bug.... started and run fine, I've tested the starter and solenoid... working fine....all side lights, indicators, horn, emergency flasher, inside lights......All working! I've looked at the wiring and I can't seem to find a broken/split one. I've cleaned up all the fuse holders and checked the fuse box for cracks.... nothing!!
So what have I done?!?? There's obviously a short somewhere but how do I find it?!? I've buggered my bus up and annoyed with myself 😠
If anyone in here can possibly help I'd be very,, very grateful...TIA.

Sounds to me like the alternator is fried and back feeding the ignition, take the wire of from the warning light terminal on the alternator and see if it all works as normal. If so new alternator.

You can check for shorts with a test meter, essential to maintaining your bus. Using that you can step through each circuit to check, shorts , if that's what it is, can be located. I won't say it can be found quickly but stick at it you will get there.

you have turned the key circuit into permanently hot (live) so when you turn off the key you are not disconnecting.

Whatever you do though don't do it with the battery connected and when you do connect it to check your work make sure you've got a fire extinguisher nearby.

Pictures you posted are clear, check vs the bentley/haynes wiring diagrams ?

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Did as you said....wire off... ignition on and no gen light on! Sounds like you're right, so looks like the alternator is fkd....
Wire on, ignition on and gen light back on,so looks like I'll be fitting a new alternator! Thanks for your help 67panel. 👍
Thank you also pgtips and Gary type2 . I've taken everything on board... cheers guys 👍

The wires I'd taken off to make the gen light go out when battery back on, hopefully the right wires,it worked anyhow!
And my set up, never let me down until I messed it up 🙄😞

I’m absolutely Olympic standard at being hopeless with the electrics. But have you got another power source? Like a leisure battery or a jump start box.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,it’s all like magic to me :)

Hi ozziedog, Yeah I'm the same😔
Yes I've got a leisure battery!.... It's probably a factor, but as I'm clueless about the electrics......
What I’m thinking is that the power has to be coming from somewhere. So if you’ve got your earth lead off the main battery, the leisure battery has to be providing the power. So to eliminate part of the problem you are trying to solve, take your live and earth leads off your leisure battery then you are dealing with less variables. When you take your leads off the battery, make sure they can’t touch your bodywork by insulating them. That could be putting them in old milk containers / plastic bottles or insulation tape. Take your earth off first, then your live, but be ready and insulate them before you put them down in the van anywhere. I’d also pop something on your live terminal to anything from a condom to a terminal cover like you get on a new battery or even a cap off a small bottle. Then you might be in with a chance of finding your issue.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, Process of elimination :)
