Hi, I hope someone on here can help me.
I've got a 71 lhd westy, I imported it in 2007,all electrics working but lights changed to UK spec for initial MOT.
I've used the bus regularly since 2007 , always passed MOTs , right up to date., many trips in Europe, all over UK, never had a electrical problem.... before now, and I caused it!!
Came back from a trip to Wales, realised that my dip/main beam had stopped working. Next day I checked all the wires and relays, all working fine. Next day I thought I'd check everything again, pulling out the fusebox again to re - check it all, I had trouble unclipping the fusebox this time,so yanked it out....2 fuses blew and obviously I changed them. ( Yes, I know I should have taken the leads of the battery, but I didn't....I'm an idiot. ).
I noticed that without the key in the gen light was on!? So I turned the key and she started as normal...... turned the key off.....and the engine carried on turning?!??!! I went to the engine bay and took the negative lead offs and it stopped. Looked at the gen light it's on, (I'd put the negative lead back on)even without the key in the ignition. I haven't been able to start the bus ever since!
I've tested all the relays in my 71 Beetle, tested the dizzy (electric ignition,) in the bug.... started and run fine, I've tested the starter and solenoid... working fine....all side lights, indicators, horn, emergency flasher, inside lights......All working! I've looked at the wiring and I can't seem to find a broken/split one. I've cleaned up all the fuse holders and checked the fuse box for cracks.... nothing!!
So what have I done?!?? There's obviously a short somewhere but how do I find it?!? I've buggered my bus up and annoyed with myself
If anyone in here can possibly help I'd be very,, very grateful...TIA.
