that's a latebay and later than 74, petrol cap isn't covered by a flap, lock is in door not slider handle, it was a panel van you can tell by the windows, i reckon it's a v5 swap for free tax from a rusty 71. What does the engine hatch look like?
danbury sell the brand new good years off the brazzy busses cheap as they fit alloys to them theres a guy on late bay who sells them i'll try to find the link.

i'd imagine low oil due to leak or suchlike let the engine overheat and the noise you heard was the bearings rumbling then letting go..... how fast were you going and for how long? had you ever done a long journey before under the same circumstances etc? did you know how much oil the van used on...
i doubt you'll find out now it's been uk registered, mine came with the u.s plates on and i had the u.s title with it on, the d.v.l.a keep the title when you uk register the van so unless you had plates/title you will struggle, you could possibly contact the previous owner and see if they know...
seen it, i'm not sure on that one, to be fair i'm searching already in the uk at the moment will import if i need to for thhe right one, no rush the right one will find me.
don't get what you mean by air intake? none of the tinwear is the same you need the complete type 1 engine tin and some of it is "rare" for rare read expensive.
the tinware is all different as is the engine hanger but all is doable and available, some crossovers are fitted with a 1700 type 4 engine as standard, no bodywork or chassis will have been cut to convert to type 4 if it wasn't original
