Horrible noise, oil light, Bang!!! Cry!

Lovely weekend camping in the sun in Kent (not technical I know)! But...... On the way back up the M1 last night a horrific noise started from the engine bay, oil light flickering. With no where to pull over I had to try and reach next junction. Needles to say we didn't, oil light came on fully, loss of power followed by a bit of a bang and then nothing at all! Rest of the journey was on the back of a lorry... I really could cry! Please someone tell me this isn't a definite new engine (although I think it probably is).

Oil light means low oil pressure, which can mean its got very hot.

Can you turn the engine over with a big spanner on the gland nut on the crankshaft pulley?

From that description, I reckon a full rebuild is the minimum tbh :? Could have had a rod let go or a crank snap. Won't know till the motor is split.

Doesn't sound good i'm afraid. Oil light would indicate low oil pressure, so good chance crank or rod knackered. May be a dropped valve if your lucky. But minimum is engine out. Take the heads off and have a look, if there's nothing, its the bottom end. Possible rebuild, but with re machining etc, a good second hand engine would be your best bet, or a 'good' rebuilt one.

have you checked to see if there's any oil left in the engine?

may not be completely seized, but still going to need to be stripped down & inspected.

Couldn't turn it by hand but now it's had nearly 24hrs to chill I tried the key :shock: , probably shouldn't have, but it fired! Sounded so rough though I immediately turned it off.

Checked oil and nothing on the dip stick despite being topped up before the journey down, van is on the angle though. Could it have dumped its oil unnoticed somewhere near the M25 and then ****** itself internally? Or is it more likely it ****** itself and then dropped the oil, didn't notice any sign of any but it was night.

Suppose it doesn't matter really. Anybody think of any ball park figures or is it really a 'how longs a piece of string' type of thing?

the engine could of been ditching the oil slowly over the journey, causing the engine to overheat, which in turn would lead to what oil was left in the sump, breaking down & losing viscosity, this would lead to your engine overheating even more until a catastrophic failure occurs. it could also of ditched the oil in one hit, where the outcome is pretty much the same if you keep the engine running with no oil in it. to be honest mate, you'll have more of an idea of what the damage is & what caused it, when you strip down the engine & inspect it. i'd imagine it's not going to look pretty though. i wouldn't turn it over using the key again if i was you, it's only going to add to the damage, especially as there's no oil in the sump. good luck with the strip down & i hope it's not proper buggered.

Definitely propped buggered! After much saving/ borrowing/ investigating, we got it on to a local specialist. It turns out that a valve broke which in turn broke a part of the piston which in turn broke something in the crank case! So new one is going in as we speak! Pics when I get it back... Which could be a while as we're progressing at a 'relaxed' pace... Not that I mind

i'd imagine low oil due to leak or suchlike let the engine overheat and the noise you heard was the bearings rumbling then letting go..... how fast were you going and for how long? had you ever done a long journey before under the same circumstances etc? did you know how much oil the van used on a normal run...... the engine will require rebuild there's no point trying to say any dfferent, this is why an oil pressure gauge or temp gauge is a life saver, if you rely on the oil light only you have virtually no time to save it, the worst thing you did was carrying on when the noise/light started although it was probably fubar'd by then anyway..... sorry to say but it's engine out time.

Glad to hear your getting it sorted.

Valves snapping is mainly the result of overheating, by the way.

The loss of oil happened after the noise you describe when you were trying to make it to the next junction. The valve head will have made a hole in the piston and this would then pump the the oil out of the engine quite quickly.

Finally, the new engine is in!!!

We're going to visit it today, but leaving it with the garage to have a continental bed put in the roof. We've got to choose the material.

So exited to have a cheeky test drive!
