Just got the latest VolksWorld mag and there's a Split resto reported to cost £90k  , last month there was a beetle resto that was $100k   . What's going on with the scene when resto's are costing more than you can pick up a genuine orginal low mile Bus/bug for. I know which I'd prefer.

without meaning to sound an analist or a wet sponge....there are a lot of people who have serious jobs with very little spare time. So in the old days it would be a resto of passion done by the owner and i fully respect that, but to these high earners in stressful jobs they want something they love to play with and send it to the most renowned shop in their country...leading to huge costs. In my world i say if you want something , have the passion and the money then go for it, but i will always give a owner restored vehicle more respect. :msn4:

Agreed, I do give a lot more respect for a home built VW, I once asked a Guy about his air ride on his bug, his answer was " I dont know it was fitted when I bought it" where is the fun in that! saying that if I had a big load of cash in the bank I would love to spend it on getting the pros to build me a bus, but I havent so I do all my own work.

But 90k on a bus, thats wild, I would want it to give me aural pleaseure for that much money lol

Totally agree there`s some big money bus`s out their.Must admit I do like doing my own stuff,It may not look the best but I take pride in the fact I did it myself.Re-spray,lowering & interior.Gone off volks world at the mo,all adds and big money rides.
Phil.

I have a 'serious Job' and a family as well, but having the Bus to tinker with in the garage keeps me sane :) . Don't get me wrong I have no problem with people shedding out so much money, but if I had some spare cash give me a OG bus any day.

it happens in the water cooled scene too, some bloke walked into premier vehicle services with £35k and asked them to make him a mk2 golf. they did and it looked like a 35k golf. a bit over the top and garish just like that 100k beetle. but these high money rollers dont last long. usually the owner tours it for a year to as many shows as they can, then everyone is just bored of it. then as they havent actually done the work on it, they have no idea how to fix it, look after it, or change it and improve on it. so they dissappear just as quick as they emerge. i much prefer a steady creeper of a project which evolves over time with a few different sets of rims, trims etc than something that just arrives done

That would be the one with the bench seat, apparently its sat somewhere collecting dust although i think it is a different colour now! to be fair I think Steve Denton is awesome, too expensive for me, dont get me wrong if I had the money I would spend it with him and Im glad that people do, its good to have people like this to give us something to strive for!

If all we had were people like me doing the odd bit here and there in the garage, we would never have any feature cars, no magazines, and no scene!

yes mate that was the very car. you're right steve dentons work is flawless. it just seemed that with that very car the bloke who owned it had very little input into how it ended, he just threw money into. there is nowt wrong with spending big money on a car but i think that they cost the money because they want doing "now" rather than taking the time to hunt out a bargain here and there. some of the buses on here are £30k buses all in and they are awsome 8) and i couldnt think of anyway to improve them. chrome plating the underneath of them would be a good way of spending an extra £20k i suppose but not many people ever see that bit so it seems a bit pointless. ive not seen the 90k bus yet but i bet it could have been done a lot cheaper if the owner had had a tighter hold of the purse strings

If you've got a spare 90k to throw at a vehicle, you're unlikely to notice it that much.....

It's the same as your pay, you adapt your lifestyle to your earnings, spending what you have.
What seems like normal spending to me, with my bus, a lot of my (non vw) friends believe to be excessive.....

If I had more, I'd probably spend it on my bus as well!

You have to look at the context of this particular 90k bus. It was restored as a prize for a German TV show and not funded by an individual with deep pockets ( although there are plenty of these in the scene ).
Still a lot of money though, but I'm sure most of us would be happy to win it.
