Does anyone out there on early bay know how difficult it is to fit a 1303 beetle gearbox in a early bay for the luxury of a taller 4th gear . I want to be able to pull 70mph and keep with motorway traffic without blowing my motor or loosing my ability to hear....

I think its possible, I think Egotrippin had it done to his bus. From memory you need a kit that Tim at Roadhouse Retro sells for £295(I think) that enables the box to be fitted in a bus.

Suggest you contact Egotrippin or Monkeyspinner Tim for a more accurate respond.

Also I could be completely wrong

think you are correct graham.......

karl i believe you may need a 1303s gearbox though if it makes any difference, get the kit and fit it yourself , saves a few sheckles

Hey steve how you been? I remember you said a kit is needed, i'll deffo do it myself because the labour and stuff will be mega £££

I don't think Tim makes any money on the kits, so if you bought one from the states, it won't be much cheaper.

I spoke to him this morning about this very subject ;)

Yep, it's the 1303S 'box you want and they're pretty sort after as splittie owners grab a lot of them for their IRS conversions.

The kit that Tim sells allows the fitting of the bug box into a bay.

I'm told you do not need the kit :?: and intend doing the same of the coming weeks.
All you need to do is:-
1/ make extenders for the gear linkage and clutch cable
2/ offer the box up and make a bracket to carry it

the drive shafts that are supplied with these kits are 14mm longer but I understand that if you are running the back lower than standard you will get away with using your bus shafts but you will need to change the in board CV joint (need to check which one.

I will hopefull, if all goes well :? be putting it up on my thread.
Ego would be a good contact also as I believe he went the route I'm intended on going

You would use the Beetle inner CV's.

I guess you could change the smaller Beetle CV to the 100mm if you used Trekker output flanges.

Not easy to find.

I asked for info on this a while back, someone has 'resurected' this thread in 'Technical'. Look for a thread titled 'gearbox swap' for more info and confusion! For the record, have bought the kit and box but have yet to get my hands dirty so cannot comment on what is involved.

It was me that opened the thread again.

I have been dicked about with selling my bus. I got kicked in the nuts on the price, then matey still changed his mind & decided he didn't want an old car.

**** it, 2007 efi & turbo on the way. I have spent the last 2 days on the phone getting prices for stuff. I have a load of stuff on order so will be a bit further forward.

I got a 6 rib today that needs a rebuild. I got a keen price from Cogbox, so might take him up on it. I know I will have a super box to take the power of the engine.

I bought a charge cooler for the turbo too & priced up a set of Fuchs. This might end up one angry mother F**king bus!

What mods did you have to do to get a 6 ribber in?

Wow, sounds like 'someone' has got you rather focused on putting together a rather hot bus! Was looking damn fine to start with, now gonna be more than a bit quick with it! Cracking stuff! Sounds like Gary may be the man for info on the 6-rib fitting.

Just an update, that box I have is a 5 rib from an 1800. CM code. It has not quite a taller diff, but might still do the trick.

******* hell! 2007cc, fuel injection and turbocharged, I hope you've invested in some CSP disc's with all that power. That must be 200HP+ at least!!!!

Not sure what it's gonna be. I have bought a charge cooler as well so that should help.

I have converted the brakes to a late bay setup. They seem to work ok, but might need uprating too.

I made a custom brace bar yesterday to clear the full flow & started looking at mounting the turbo. It's not going to be easy & some cleaver fabrication will be needed.
