Hello there, been viewing this forum for a year now and i must say the standard of peoples bays on here are awsome

Picked up my bay just over a year ago now from a mate of a mate, never owned a vw before so im very much learning the ropes, i grew up with fords and also own a sierra cosworth ( gets no love anymore as the bus has completly sucked me in lol )

I looked around for a few months for a bay and this one came up, not to everyones taste but seemed pretty clean and a very good base to start with, had a new front panel bits of welding here and there and obviously the paint in porsch gt3 green.

Thought id start a little resto going as im always tinkering around with her and also to get peoples views on what im doing, if somethings not right or something could be done deferintaly please give me some feed back.

heres a few pics from when we picked her up

Had loads of bits missing bits of trim etc, none of the lights worked and the engine was worn. Firsts up was the wireing, my dads a dab hand with this so few weekends spent round his house had a new fuse box fitted and all the lights working correctly

The heaters wernt piped up and also had lots of bits missing inside and generally tatty inside, this was always a bit of a blank canvis and only really started on the inside this weekend.

I gave the engine a fewshen up over the christmas period including, new oil pump, rebuilt heads with new valves etc, 1641 barrel & pistons, fitted the thermostat and flaps which had been left out, header exhaust ( empi one until funds allow ) weber 34 ict's, leads & coil, alternator conversion and a few dress up parts.

Really enjoyed doing that as it was just completly new to me bein aircooled, also really helped me understnad the engine more. Shes all back together now and running ok booked in for set up on tuesday so fingers crossed.

I hated the inside, got 914 ( i think ) front seats loads of chequer and a rock n roll bed, been looking at all the different interior options. Had a play around this weekend with some new floor, 240v heater and some speakers. Ordered up a 13 peice ply set from a joinery company on the net so hopfeully over the next few months i can crack on with the inside and get lots of use from her over the summer months

Heres a few pics from earlier, popped down to power engineering in uxbridge to set up the webers. Ian ball down there has always looked after my cosworth and turns out he has a few bugs of his own

Firstly she was ver lean on idle i think he re jetted to a 60 which cured this, tieming was spot on but 1&2 wasnt 100% happy ian put this down to maybe the valve clearences being slightly too tight, i will check this at the weekend.

Had trouble with 100% throttle aswell due to the wank over head linkage, was down on power as a result of this making 51 bhp on the nose with 88 lb / ft, ian couldnt get it to return properly from full to idle so was left at a safe position.

Over all very happy with the service and she drives lovely, just need to save up for the csp linkage and get full throttle, he rekons theres another 10-15 bhp in there

Anyway heres afew pics

Thanks mate

Had a trip up to northampton with the mrs an the dog the bus ran faultlessly

Plugged in the 240 for the first time at billing aquadrome and it had us sweating in minutes was really happy with that. So many bits i need to sort but as usal i want everything at once

Soon as i go over 40 the drivers mirior folds round the other way so think thats first on the list, have so new chrome ones in the garage prob stick them on tomorrow night as the door cards are off. Still waiting for my 13 peice ply set hopefully be hbere this week cant wait to get that fitted.

Need to source some heater levers and cables and get some heat on the screen, also missing the gubbins behind the dash too

Its never ending...

Love the colour. Glad it's not just me that has half the heater bits missing! I'm slowly putting them all back in. Just got the long pipe and the plastic bits between the heat exchangers to get it hooked up again. Then just the heater cables. It'll all work again one day. That's half the fun!

ha ha not sure about fun, the fella who sprayed her obviously couldnt be arsed to fit half the bits back prob in a skip somewhere, my poor wallet

Headed up to reading after work on saturday as there was a gun dog show going on, nice camp site around the corner, met some friends and the drinking comenced

Had a good show on sunday and as you all know the weather was banging ( along with my head )

Camper ran fine untill i pulled up at the garage ! oil pouring everywhere, quickly swithched her off and couldnt for the life of me see where it was comming from. Shot down there after work next day and after scratching my head for awhile turns out one of the rocker cover sleeves has a hairline crack !!!

Ordered up the adjustable ones from machine 7 so will be fitting these at the weekend.... few pics

Not much to update on really, oil leaks all sorted for the moment lol, fitted just one of the adjustable push rods sleves. Upon expection the valve clearences where very tight indeed ! bit worrying really as i paid someone to adjust them ! Fitted a new set of pushrods and followed the haynes manuel to set them, took me a while but got the hang of it and something i can now keep an eye on myself.

Rigged up a couple of return springs from the roof of the engine bay as the wanky hex wasnt quite returning properly, she know seems to be running a dream with these sorted and alot quiter without the bent pushrod

Fitted my bugpack breather to the firewall and pipped into each filter so i ll see how i get on with that..

Ordered up a mesh for behind the front grill didnt realise it was ment to have one at first and looks miles better fitted

Picked up an oil pressure & oil temp gauge from a fella on volkszone forum with the senders so if i get time these will be fitted at the wekend

Know i though mine was an early bay  ( bein new to the vw scene :p ) someone spotted i had the wrong rear lights, now can i buy a pair and fit or have i got the wrong rear pannel as i know some of it has been changed ???

Also the front indicators i really dont like them, jsut kampers have the lenses and back part so can these be fitted aswell without having to chop bits of panel out ???

heres a couple of pics...
