Hi all
Looking for a list of "sensible" and "recommended" modifications that I should consider on my 68 bay. Currently being restored, looking for recommendations and contacts for the following:

1) suspension
2) steering
3) engine (would consider replacement for sensible cruising, not speed!)

Anything else that's been proven to make the old girl run nicer on the road. Only considering mods as I haven't driven a bay before, but after driving my split I wish I'd have done a few mods to ride. : )

Thanks for the help.

P.S I loved the camper jam weekend.......

Get a Gene Berg shifter - it has been my best investment in the bus so far.

And a fire suppression system of some description

I do have fire protection in the splitt, so that's a definate for the bay.

DISC BRAKES (if only I could afford some),twin carbs ,mild cam and ported heads.fliped spindles if you want to be closer to the ground and a steering rack conversion.OHH thats my wish list  sofar have the twin carbs and ported heads(and some promising bits for rack conversion!!!)I know that combination works and makes a very drivable/usable bus

When I bought the bus, he threw in Porsche 944 discs and 944 driveshafts. Guess I should you use those then? Trip to camperjam was the first time I used the split on a journey since its completion. I did notice the lack of stopping power!!

There was an earlybay following me out of camperjam down the A41, he would have noticed my bracking. I had the light brown and cream split with the poppy red leather interior.

I had the option to buy the 914 engine, didn't bother in the end. Should I have bought it?

Thanks for the list :D

Drum brakes aren't really a problem as long as you keep on top of the adjustment.

If it were me-

quick-shift kit (fiver from GSF or similar, go for a metal version)
fire suppression system, as mentioned.
LPG conversion, 25mpg isn't great.
a nice vintage looking stereo
Velleman ignition module (tenner, maplins- means your points last pretty much indefinitely)
Propex heater or similar
Roof rack for the spare wheel- I don't like 'em on the front, and they take up a lot of space
a couple of optics for spirits
machine guns that poke out of the bodywork.

I like your style

and on another note, a proper service and make sure the cooling system is complete and functional

If you have 944 brakes (make sure they are early ones) then fit these noting you'll need 5*130 PCD rims

Re-bush the gearlinkage front to back if at all worn

Check all parts of the steering and replace as necessary

As above, carry are fire extinguisher and consider getting an engine mounted one

Use the correct (R9 I think) fuel hoses, anything less and........well, just don't go there

Re-build your locks if any key fits (i.e. they are worn out)

Go through the electrics and weed out any previous bodges -there are always some on an old VW
