Evenin' folks,

I have a '71 bay and I'm not reet sure whether it's got the one year only front brake calipers or whether they're summat else. Are there any distinguishing features that I can look for so I can decide what I've got?

cheers

Ian

early 71 had one grease nipple per caliper later 71 had 2, the 71 is smaller than the 72 side by side which probably wont help yer.

Cheers Aaron,

I'm pleased to say that like good pairs of knockers, each of my calipers have two nipples each :D

So are my later '71 calipers the one year only type? I'm still not too clear y' see cos I know that calipers were introduced in August '70.........

Cheers

Ian

1970/71 Vans were the 1 year only calipers, unfortunately this is the year that i own,
Yours should be the standard, easy to get caliper

Nice one, thanks for that Froggy.

I'm after a caliper repair kit y' see and I just wanted to make sure I got the right stuff.

cheers

Ian

there both one year only single and double nippled...I believe the pistons were the same just the physical size and the chambers were increased owing to thicker discs....

70-72 the discs were the same.

However many nipples they have, the '71 and '72 calipers are interchangeable. I have a 1 nipple one and a 2 nipple on on the front of my bay, and it pulls up just fine.

The calipers and discs changed in performance for the '73 model year.

(08/72 onwards is the '73 model year, 08/70 onwards is the '71 model year etc etc)
:)

Mines a 71 , the first Pads I got were to large to fit in the caliper, the second ones which were listed for later bays were to thick. So it seems there are three diferent calipers . :? Still havnt got the right ones.

Three types of calipers have been used since the introduction of the disc brakes. The first two are identical except for the addition of the second bleed valve added to the bottom of the caliper in march 71. The 73 model has a markedly larger brake caliper and thicker pads (14mm) the early calipers have the thinner pads (10mm) the pistons are also of different lengths they can be interchanged but shouldnt if you wish to stop....

Are you saying '71 and '72 shouldn't be interchanged, or that '71 and '73 shouldn't be interchanged?

71 - 73 as its the 73 that has the longer pistons fitted.

as the 72 caliper is the 71 second generation as per your earlier post. August 73 was the introduction of the thicker pads and larger caliper....
