I'm struggling to find details (photos or diagrams) of how the accelerator pedal should be correctly fitted. Something is not right with mine. I have to push the pedal flat to the floor to get any revs. All is OK at the carb end, it looks like the linkage under the pedal requires attention.
Any help, diagrams, photos etc would be great.

Thanks.

Sorry I can't help with any photos, but on my van the whole rod linkage was so worn I was only getting about two thirds travel on the cable/carb butterfly.

If you get someone to work the accelerator pedal while you watch the rod linkage under the cab floor, it'll soon become clear if the linkage is worn and the which bits are worn.

I bought a linkage kit from one of the usual VW suppliers (there's also diagram/pictures on JK and Heritage web sites of the linkage which may help you) and this made a huge difference, but due to wear in the bracket passing through the front chassis member I still can't get 100% full throttle, more like 90%. As I said though, it's much, much better than it was.

Have a look at the mechanism underneath the cab floor its probably shot, there are a lot of pivots/bushes to wear out.
I gather the best way to improve them is to fit a late bay type as it is mostly mounted inside the cab(rather than outside the acb like yours) & is made of more substantial components.

The bracket by the horn (on LHS of pic) is usually pretty worn.

Thanks for the great responses. The photo really helps. The left side by the horn looks like mine, but, the right side on my van is a mess and looks nothing like the photo. There's evidence of some welding going on too, a bodge I reckon. I think I'll be going for an upgrade. I've driven a '78 bay and that responded instantly so a later set up could be going in.

I replaced my throttle linkage yesterday with a JK kit, but the short drop arm from the pedal to the pivot is too short. Fits perfectly, but there isn't full throttle travel.

Going to weld the wear marks up and add a couple of washers and refit.
The rest of the kit is OK.

The pic in the above reply looks nothing like mine under the pedal though.........mine's a rhd.

If your not precious about originality ditch it and fit a set up from a later bay - there are two later set ups - both run across the cab floor - the best is the really late one with the black plastic cover, the earlier one is more discreet. But both give a more direct pull and have less pivots/ moving parts giving a much more responsive pedal. Save the money wasted on these 'kits' and get a late set up.

you will have to cut a slot near the handbrake lever and use two P- clips to hold the bar to the floor. Somewhere like megabug will provide parts - you will need everything from Pedal, cross floor rod and a cover for the later ones.

I bought the JK replacement set up and drilled out the end of the rods to fit a split pin as the c clips kept coming off

So is mine ;)
May be us cross dressers have a one year only assembly?

I think the long and short arms is an age related thing. My 70 had the long arm, I librated a replacement off either a 71 or a pre 75 late bay and it had the shorter arm.
