Are all reds legal for mot?/uk,registering? I know I've gotta sort the us to uk indicator wiring cheers aaron

I have a cheapo set of euros for mot . I've heard of people painting the bulbs green so the look brownie amber when flashing ... Not tried it myself ...

Chris

it is actually a grey area, the law states that lighting can be how it was "when manufactured" if you can prove this was the case then you could convince the tester if he had the ride that morning and was in a good mood, this could prove difficult with a vw though but they pass american cars with red indicators because they don't have a choice...... if it was me i'd convert the reverse lights to indicators - let's face it with the idiots on todays roads you don't want anyone hitting you up the arse at a turning if they didn't understand your lighting.

My Mot tester does lots of classics and Americans and doesn't have a problem with the US spec. But after a few fellow road users misinterpreting my turn signals I wired up the reverse lights with orange bulbs and upgraded the brake/tail lights with LEDs. Much safer and looks as it should.
I sometimes think I might wire a period looking spot/fog light on the bumper for a reverse light but never really found a need for it - I just use the hazards for reversing if I need to.

Some ****** meathead with his teeny tiny girlfriend and a BMW stopped to point out that I didn't have a reversing light on my van as I waved him past courteously. I leaned out the window and pointed out it was a classic vehicle and did not require reversing lights under the law as they were actually classed as a courtesy light. He looked confused, so I just said 'If your girlfriends bare arse was moving towards you. would you not realise what direction it was travelling in?' She giggled and he ****** off in a wheel spin.

I just put a green bulb in and bobs your uncle a orange flashing indicator despite the red lense.

OG rear lights/indicators are actually a double fail, as its not just the bulb colour, but as standard an early bay will use a single filament bulb for the brake light and the indicator, so the brake light flashes when indicating and this is its own seperate fail.

Its no grey area, the mot regs are clear, and any bay window should comply ... the rest is down to leniant testers. Fair enough to anyone who gets through, but do you really want people like the BMW driving meathead mentioned previously second guessing what you are upto in your thousands of pounds worth of bus? For the sake of it, Id get it sorted either by using euro spec lenses and units, or by converting the reverse lights. :)

Just changing the fittings is not enough, the way the American lights work mean when your braking the indicator won't flash. Have a look at this thread it really worked and nice and easy. Read page two I have the short version that kind of explains it

both sam and i have done threads on this, you can convert the rear lights to uk spec thanks to Th unique way vw doubled up the cabling to the lights on the back, fit the euro bulb housing, fit green bulbs then you keep the red lenses and you get to keep the reverse/courtesy light

As above this will solve the issues Clem has pointed out and will leave you with legal rear lights that have an all red lens
