alternator belt

i have an alternator conversion on my bus and the belt is loose/worn I've ordered a new one which has teeth but the current one is smooth

can anyone shed some light on this

The newer tougher alternator belts are toothed and the older dynamo ones were smooth. I'm no expert but found that out when I ordered my alternator conversion kit yesterday. I'm sure someone who knows a thing or too will add to this.

I have alternator on my Ghia , same engine as Early Bay and now have tooth belt fitted. Better belt and less slip. After fitting and running for a few miles you may have to alter tension and then forget about it.

Toothed belt is incorrect. The original smooth belts are all 'fabric' wrapped, which although reduces friction a little bit, it means the belt last much longer.

Toothed belts have the rubber in contact with the pulleys, and as this wears you will find the fabric on the top of the belt becomes your contact patch which is significantly less than it needs to be.

Optibelts are some of the best replacements, GSF still sell them i think.

I'm currently using a Dunlop premium wrapped belt, SPA907 size. They have a slightly larger contact area and they are a bit cheaper than the Optibelts from VW suppliers.
