Hmm, this ones baffling me.

Fitted an alternator conversion a few weeks ago, all good for 1,000 miles, then heard a strange noise & realised that it was coming from the pulley, this had become warped/bent. As this was clearly made of cheese, I bought a Tru-Spin one, checked everything was spinning freely, no problems, checked keyway etc all good. Fitted new pulley, belt (not too tight), everything in line etc.

250 miles later, whirring sound then BANG !

The inner pulley has disintegrated, pieces all over the engine bay (fortunately missing the rear quarters), the drive belt is still intact

Any ideas anyone?

It looks as if the pulley has micro cracks, so could be too hard, but I am certainly open to suggestions......

Thanks

Graham

I always used second hand og parts for alternator conversions ... Loads cheaper and proper German quality. The only kit I've seen had to be returned as the castings were so poor :(

If it's the part I think it is I have an og one your welcome to if you want it Graham?

Always use OG VW top and bottom pullys. They might not look as Gucci (well the bottom one anyway) but they are top quality.
Glad it didnt do too much damage.

That looks nasty.I agree orginal parts are best but when i changed mine to an alternator i used a kit.I used the pulley as i destroyed the old one getting the spacer out from behind it.After that i changed the bottom pulley for a cheap one with timing marks as i had timming issues. So far all is well.Charged battery and improved fuel economy/performance(what there is)must have been an ill fitting pulley or faulty one.Bad luck
