OK!

I have just got wind that the only manufacturer (in the states) I am aware of still making new L and R series wafers is to stop production very soon due to a lack of general interest.....(I believe theres a german company doing lmited runs adhoc)

I can get springs by the bucket load at 50p per spring (I know its quite a bit but you try and source the right one in quantity)

If your interested in getting any for now and rejigging your own locks drop me a line or you want to set some aside for future repairs pm me they work out at approx £1.20 each....

They come in 4 sizes 1 thru 4, 4 only ever on busses being used in the ignition, so those that have done a rebuild of a barrel and found a free space or two thats the reason....

They will only deal wholesale and a locksmith I know is putting in two more orders for his stock but is willing to up the order to accomodate anyone elses requirements....

Hes also got a good line in repro keys as blanks or can cut by code now that his new source has sorted its quality

I'll have a look as hes changed the supplier think at current rate its about £12, apparently the quality is improved, though the previous ones he had were to my mine good...

that said wolfsburg west knock em out at $9 and most uk sellers last year with good exchange rate were £10

waiting on some completed keys cut to code now as its here where his prices are good, well as long as he gets them done they are (long story).... not sure on what he can do them for but the back order I had with him was £25 for 2......

What would the cost be for 2 complete barrels? I have 3 different keys at moment and would love 1 key opens all!
Is this an easy enough job to do DIY?

ah you see there lies the problem, you either

1. buy a variety to cover with excess
2. break open you locks and count the wafers and types that come out

remember that any No. 4s will be empty spaces in the doors, most door barrels will have 9 wafer slots and 8 filled whereas the ignition will have 10 all filled...

so for a pair of cab doors 9 times out of 10 will need 16 wafers...

also if you stripping them the wafers are marked/notched no notches =1, 1 notch =2 etc...

if theres enough the price is likely to drop....

and its a piece of proverbial to do just be careful with the ignition its held in with what appears to be a single pin when in fact its two pins end to end

I personally am waiting on 40 this round but may look at getting a shit load for future, the used ones from old barrels can be in a real shocking state..

I was thinking maybe adjust the cab doors to suit the ignition. The ignition is OG as is the rear tail gate so was hoping to match the doors to these

Hi!

I'd be interested in all my locks matching - though not sure if i would make more of a mess doing it myself - anyone around that can rebuild them to match?!

Alistair

as the above post I am interested in getting all mine matching, maybe someone will does it at a show ?

Its unbelieveably easy fella, just get the barrel thoroughly cleaned and your laughing....
So for the uninitiated, do you remove whole handle from door, undo a clip or something to remove the barrel then take out wafer things which are numbered then write down the order and wafer numbers.

Repeat the process for the locks you need to change but possibly purchase wafers of the missing numbers ?

Theres a couple of threads on here regarding re-building locks - getting the handles off is pretty easy, just follow haynes etc to rebuild the barrels look here:

YMFB... its fairly straight forward, remove the handle have a rummage around in the crud and corrossion for the grub screw small watch makers slotted and its out...

keep the key in the barrel when removing as the wafersand springs can fly, though generally the barrels clogged with grease and 40 years of filth they barely move (being the main reason for changeing them and the damage caused to the wafers)...

If your lucky enough to have marked wafers then count the notches at the non sprung end, remember 0 notches = 1 and 3 notches = 4....... ( the notches can be either on the narrow end or the bottom of the long side or as said non existant )

Well, looks like my barrels will be getting a little treat....

If your wanting help and are going to big bang or Stanford give us a shout.....

If your wanting wafers and springs let me know, looks like if theres enough the costs likely to be nearer £1 for wafers and £0.50 for srings.....

the springs have a hard life and you'll see the difference the moment you get good ones installed and use graphite powder to lube them.... closest thing to new locks and at a fraction of the cost....plus you get the chance to one key the set.... 8)

just found out he'llbe putting in an order at the end of March and it stands to be the final one if you really want to order some, drop your name on the list and what your wanting....

1. Araon.....40x No 1,2,3 & 20x No 4, 50 springs.
