Batley, it's God awful!
Hi Guru's,
I have a noise coming from the back so thought it could be the drive shafts so took them out and they didn't seem so bad so greased them and stuck 'em back. It seems there is a bit of movement on the axle final drive flange if that the right bit (in and out). So if there is a bit of play what do can I do about it - is it possible to adjust, is this common and has anyone got a remedy that doesn't involve throwing money around like confetti ?

Tar :?:

If you are saying your drive shafts have play longnitudally, (as opposed to rotationally), they are supposed to, but only by a few mm.

This is to accomodate for the movement of the CV joint and suspension.

So if that's the play you are talking about don't shim it up or something will break when yiou next hit a bump

A while ago a circlip at the CV joint on mine broke, and the movement was about 20mm - resulting in a very loud clanging/banging, especially when slowing down through the gears.

Hope that helps - if only to eliminate the drive shaft play

Hi, I have checked the drive shaft and C.V joint it is coming from (I think) the drive flange the bit between the C.V and gearbox. There seems to be a bit of movement so wondering whether i could get away with a shim and new circlip? It's the N/S just wondering if anybody else had this issue?

There are really no normal wear items there that would result in longitudinal play. Perhaps someone had the drive flange
out, as they would to replace the oil seal, and forgot the spacer underneath on reassembly? If not, you could see if a shim
will even fit under the snap ring holding the drive flange on (doubtful).

From looking at both the Type 2 and Type 1 Bentley manuals, it seems that not only is axial movement of the flange not
to be expected, but it may be required to compress the thrust/spacer ring underneath to install the flange.
