Could you be a little more specific about which year and version of Bus? you have? It sounds as thogh you have a US spec bus, in which case some rewiring is required.
It can be done, but it will take some rewiring. The problem lies with the fact that the US spec vehicles used the same lamp for indicators and brakes. These circuits need to be separated. You will also need to address the issue of orange sidelights on the front if that has not already been done. How were you proposing to make the reversing lights orange? They need to be 21 watt to achieve the correct flash rate. You will need to disconnect the brake light switch(s) from the combined flasher brake light relay and wire them direct to the brake lights on the rear.
If you have the reverse lamps indicating already you now need to remove the wire to terminal 54 on your hazard switch and send it to your brake lamps instead.
I have the same on mine, I just fitted orange bulbs to the reverse lamps.
you are still making it sound easy :!: can someone explaine please,as i would like to try to do my self,as for the front do i just take the orange bit out :? not that easy hay :?
cheers
I explained in my last post what you have to do. For the front you cannot just remove the orange bit as you require by law orange indicators and white side lights. The easiest way for the fronts is to fit MK 1 Golf headlamp units. These have the sidelights built in and will give you H4 headlamps as well. All that is need is to disconnect the grey wire from the indicator unit and reroute it into the headlamp shell and connect it to the sidelight assembly of the Golf headlamp. I have a circuit diagram which will allow the fitting of a hazard warning light system, headlamp flasher and using UK spec relays etc. Under this arrangement you retain the reversing lights and convert your rear lights to UK spec. Looks like this when finished, this is a '68.
thanks clarkson, you told me wot to do not how to do it,or am i abit thik,i could tell you how to lay some bricks stick one on top of another, but that dont build you a house  looks like atrip to the garage let them do it
thanks rich
In simple terms you will need to run new wiring from the the brake light switches on the master cylinder to the right rear brake light and them across the vehicle to the left hand. This will be the red original lamp. The indicator wiring is now fed to the reversing lights. Your main problem here will be sourcing a 21 watt Orange festoon bulb for the reversing lights. If the bulb wattage is not correct then you will get the wrong flash rate, an MOT failure as well the light not being bright enough.
We went through this is entire process with the '68 and as our combined relay was missing we decided to rewire to UK spec and added a headlamp flasher and hazard warning lights as well. This will need UK rear lamps and lens along with new flasher relay and headlamp relay. We used MK 1 Golf headlamps and rerouted the front side light to the sidelight in the headlamp retaining the original indicators on the front. You cannot use orange bulbs and white lens as it is a combined bulb at the front. The solution we came up with gives all the modern lighting requirements, retains the reversing lights, standard column switch and the only outward change is the rear lens. It also has the advantage of using readily available relays should a fault occur in the future.
This is my diagram and has to be read in conjunction with the USA and Non USA versions of the circuit diagram for a '68 Bay. As you can see I'm no draughtsman.
PM me with an e-mail address and I'll send it that way if this is not clear enough.
got the brake lights wired up working fine, with revers lights flashing took bulb out toput the 21w orange one in the revers light holder tried them and they stopped working put the reve light back still not working. fusses seem ok. anybody help, thanks
I just dipped the original reverse light blubs in that yellow sticky stuff you paint on your front lights when going abroad and it passed the mot no problems,
