Hi, anyone able to suggest a ball joint install tool please? There are lots out there and don't want to buy a press.

Take care

If you're talking about the press needed to press in new ball-joints into the trailing arms, then a hydraulic press is the only way. Cheaper to get someone to do it for you, or buy reconditioned trailing arms that already have the ball-joints installed.

Good luck!

Thought so, weren't to sure about the hand tools out there. I know a man with a 30 ton press so should be OK, just like to do things myself :)

Take care

I've done ball joint installation / removal using a bench vice before - it just came down to careful selection of tools / random pieces of metal to aide lining up the pieces nice and straight before winding them up in the vice.

Hi Moseley,

This is the route I wanted to go down, though struggled to find the tools :( I had a friend today press the ball joints but he totally messed it up and now have to buy another ball joint to replace!

Where did you get your tools from? I always prefer to do things myself.

Take care

I say tools... I think it was a large jubilee clip (or similar shaped piece of strong metal) to go underneath the ball joint - this protects the actual housing that the ball sits inside from being crushed, and only drives the ball joint in from the surrounding lip of metal. Then wedged blocks of wood either side of the suspension arm to give enough clearance for the ball joint spindle in between them as it gets driven into place.

Probably a lot easier to take it to a local garage!

Fair enough :) I took them to one guy and he screwed one up so off to another guy on Thursday and hope to get back same day. It wasnt easy finding someone who has the correct tools to do it. I just prefer to do as much as I can myself.

I'm coming over to see Hector Saturday night, I'll take them too work. How many need pressing?

Cheers dude, though Dan at Buswerx is doing them all tomorrow :) Thanks for the offer
