As I have a lot of time on my hands at the minute  I am thinking of attempting a basic service on my van. Things I intend to do are drain and replace engine oil and gear box oil. What else should I think about doing?

I have electronic ignition so hoping not to have to touch that...

Also what bits will I need? Gasket for oil sump, oil to put in... anything else?

Oh, and how much oil do I put in, whats the capacity?

Cheers in anticipation

Tho not probably going to be doing much of this for a week or so until the weather sorts itself out!!

Before attempting the gearbox oil change make sure you can open the filler plug before draining anything  , think this needs between 3 - 3.5 Litres of oil.
Engine oil i think is about 2.5 litres
If your still running standard oil bath air filter then remove and clean out the oil and replace with whatever engine oil your going to use.
Although you have electronic ignition its worth checking the rotor arm and dizzy cap, also check to make sure the module is still secure
Re-time the engine, it might have slipped slightly
Check / change the spark plugs at a minimum i would clean and re-gap them.
check fan belt tension
Check brake adjustment
Grease the front axle
check the brake fluid level
Check tyre pressures
Check all bulbs

I'm sure someone else will add to the list but this is all i can think of at the moment

I see in one of the latest mags that KK have a silicon sump gasket set that apparently never leaks and can be re-used bout £7 from memory, anyone tried them?

Set all your valve clearances 0.15mm for all valves (engine cold ie not run the day you set them), then you will need to check/change your timing (don't scrimp on setting the valves, tight valves lead to burn valves). Adjusting the timing may affet the tick over rpm this should be adjusted to about 850 rpm +/- 50 rpm
New spark plugs can be gapped to 0.7mm. make sure rubber boots are on the end of HT leads.
2.5 L of 20W-50 or strait 30 grade morrises oil is good the 20W-50 is about £9 for 3 L
3.5 liters of hypoid oil for the gear box. I use casterol from halfords

As has been mentioned earlier grease the front beam. There are 5 grease nipples on an early bay 2 each side and on in the middle. If you cant get the grease in new nipples are only about a quid each, pump grease in till you see fresh at the suspension bearing (make sure you have loads or rags or paper cloth. Should be done about every 3K.

Check fan belt tension, clean and change oil in oil bath (if you have one), oil door hinges (pop cap of to of pin and use engine oil), adjust brakes if you have drums and check hand brake cable are correctly adjusted (hand brake should come out about 6 clicks).

Try here for the basic owners manuals, will give you the basic service info and intervals would be worth getting yourself a bentley manual. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type2.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Have fun

Buy a Haynes 082 manual and read pages 9 to 11. These are based on the VW service manual. Follow the p11 links to the chapters and away you go.
