A few pics of my modified beetle exhaust, i'm very pleased with it and it makes a very nice troaghty sound 8)
The end pipes have a diameter of 35mm as a normal bus exhaust is 32mm.

Very nice 8)

I've been contemplating doing something similar to my van when I get a larger engine. ;)

Thanks for the comments ;)
I have a special towbar with removable knob and this was the only way to go with my towbar.
And secondly i do not like all the aftermarket bling exhausts that are hanging under the bumper (and often to low).
For my torque engine a real good choice i must say.

Can I ask what engine you're running? :)

Any more pics/details of how you made the exhaust bits? :D

I'm running a 1641 with standard (NOS) polished inlet heads, Schleicher (German) 292 cam, Riechert (German) dual 34 pci carb set with polished inlet maifolds, bosch 010 distributor the flywheel is 1 kg lighter but my compensator pulley (2.2 kg) is compensating this weight loss.
Everything is ballanced and the compression ratio is 1:8
This was the only way to go for me as a old shool tuning nerd

I'm still not sure from what car the end pipes came, i thought they where from a late bay but late bay pipes have a bend and don't have a silencer build in the pipe.
I bought them (NOS) from a German guy who said they where from a late bay but i have my doubts.
I can make some close ups from the modifications later.

Stunning engine - I remember it from another thread. :)

That exhaust works very well with the whole van. I agree that the exhaust tips don't quite look like late bay ones to me, though. Late bays had solid pipes with no silencing section. Earlies have the silencing section, but much more of a curve.

This is the 'correct' early bay one...

I plan to use a spare beetle backbox and modify another (identical to my first one) tailpipe section to fit the RHS of the bus. :)

Keep in mind that a beetle exhaust has 2x 35mm outlet pipes and a standard earlybay exhaust tip is 32mm in diameter.

Ahh - apologies - I thought you meant the outlet tip of the exhaust, rather than the backbox connection.

That would make it slightly more tricky then  - I reckon I could find a work-around though :)

Technical english is a little bit difficult for me as a Dutchie

Would there be any chance of some closer photos of the exhaust your running please m8. It really looks "top draw". I would love to have some thing like that fitted on my van :D
cheers

Hiya Harry,

Whoa! Hold up here a minute!

This is all new to me!

I've never seen the pipes and the braces/brackets for your exhaust before. Is this a kit? If so, can you point me at a seller for this kit? Or is this a homemade manufacture?

This is really cool. I'd like to do this myself!

By the way Harry.............beautiful Bus!

Hi bookwus,

Thanx!
This is not a kit, it is homemade the pipes are reverse mounted type 3 endpipes.
I'm very happy with it as it makes a nice sound and gives plenty power for a medium tuned engine.

That's a bummer!

But it looks as if you did a really nice job engineering and constructing the support brackets. Have you thought of making a few of these up in kit form and selling them? You just might have a market out there. I know of one sale for sure.

Hi Bookwus,

Who knows i get a lot of postive feedback on the system, but the problem is finding a pair of good type3 endpipes, the ones i used are NOS VW but there are so many aftermarket ones out there with so many shapes and diameters.

excellent job you done there dh, it certainly looks better than the aftermarket jobbies and suits your bus spot on. looks almost like a factory fitted option! 8) 8)

Thats exactly the reason why i made it like this, i don't like those big shiney boy racer muflers hanging down your bumper
Back in the days Oettinger used the standard beetle exhaust up to 2 liters.
