Hi Guys,

I picked up an alternator the weekend and before I start to do an alternator conversion I want to check it is ok.

Firstly it is a Bosch 043903023a so I believe it requires an external regulator, though unsure which one at present!

As the alternator is not installed how do I conduct a bench test and will I need to purchase a regulator first?

Appreciate your help :)

Take care

J

You can take it to an auto electrician/windings type place you will give you a 100% answer.

Or, you can repolarise it on the bench and if it turns (backwards) thats a 90% certainty that its ok. Instructions on repolarinsing are easily found via Google ... dont run it for any longer than 10 seconds though.

Hi Clem,

Many thanks. I would like to test the alternator without incurring extra cost just in case it is dead :) I will have a look round how to repolarise, though will I need a regulator to test?

Thanks for your time :)

Take care

J

Whoops! Just realised its an altrnator, not a dynamo. In that case, i dont know a way other than getting it actually tested, sorry, you cant repolarise an aletrnator.

I think this one has built in regulator. Simple test is to spin it up and measure the output voltage. Even at relatively low rpm you should be getting over 12 volts.

Would the same apply for testing one with an external regulator? would the regulator need to be wired in to test it?

Thanks
